On IE7 the default search engine is the Live Search. However you can add searches (I added Wikipedia, Google, Youtube) and change the default.

I don't see what the issue is with the whole search thing.

Why all the hate towards Google?

MS created this mess by creating a poor excuse for a search program for all previous versions of windows.
Quote:
As part of the pact, Microsoft is required to do three things in relation to desktop search. First, it has to add the mechanism for computer makers and users to change the default desktop search. Second, that default search program "will be launched whenever Windows launches a new top-level window to provide search results." That includes the Start menu, when a user selects to display results in a new window. However, in areas, such as the Windows Explorer, where Microsoft includes a search bar, Vista "will continue to display the search results using the internal Vista desktop search functionality." Microsoft, however, must also add a link that, when clicked, will launch the default desktop search program and display that program's results.
Read it all. In my opinion, that's inadequate. The search feature of windows has been a waste of memory for a long time - there are dozens of search programs that perform better.

My favourite is Locate, which closely resembles the Win2k/XP searchbox. It has almost instant file searching once a filename index(Press F9) has been created. If Microsoft could come up with anything decent - before the competition comes out with commercial products to fill that need - then this mess would've been avoided.

End of story.

What the quote says seems good to me. A way to change the default search and have the default search be used throughout the system. What more do you want?

What more do I want?...Microsoft just stated they're going to have multiple indexing services running if you use an alternative search. They're also saying they'll sort-of allow integrating an alternate search program, but not bother coming up with a way to integrate it into explorer.

Inadequate. How is that any better than the current method? The first two changes can be done by registry tweaks and third-party programs.

Yet another fine example of Microsoft correcting an inadequacy as soon as they're threatened by litigation... by using third-party ideas...

Google IMHO had the right to go after MS on this one. If they aren't able to implement a search feature in vista as oppososed to xp then MS has agree'd in a sense to boycott Google and other companies from conducting business through it's newer OS. Read up on Sherman Anti-trust act.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherman_Antitrust_Act
They were creating a monopolized desktop search feature. Guess MS lawyers can't win em all.

Naw, they just have to add an option for you to change which search engine you use, like in IE7.
