Motherboard not recognizing RAM

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

In an attempt to upgrade and speed up my computer a bit, I went ought and bought a stick of Patriot DDR 400 RAM.. just 512 MB..

Currently, I have it set up like this:

DDR1 Kingston 512
DDR2
DDR3 Kingston 512
DDR4

My computer currently recognizes 1 GB. However, after testing to make sure each memory stick works, I had it set up like this:

DDR1 Kingston 512
DDR2 Patriot 512
DDR3 Kingston 512
DDR4

and like this

DDR1 Patriot 512
DDR2 Kingston 512
DDR3 Kingston 512
DDR4

and like this

DDR1 Kingston 512
DDR2
DDR3 Kingston 512
DDR4 Patriot 512

I can't seem to get my mobo to recognize the new 512 stick to make 1.5 GB of memory. It won't post with it.

Am I doing something wrong here? Does all my memory have to be the same speed? The motherboard sees DDR400 speed and will load up 512MB or RAM when I have only the Patriot stick in, no problem. The Kingstons are DDR333. But from my understanding, the Patriot stick should just be slowed down, correct?

What am I doing wrong

You have to setup ram in pairs. In most motherboards nowadays, you can't just put three sticks of ram in. I don't even know if you can do just one...

yes you can do just 1 or 3, it wont be in dual channel though^^

for a while i had 1 stick of 1gb and it performed better for OC'ing than more.

does it post? can you get into bios to manually set the timings?

It might be a compatibility issue between Kingston and Patriot.

Set all your timings to auto and retry.

Oh, the two Kingstons are double sides and the Patriot only has one side with chips on it.. I didn't realize that mattered...

My computer doesn't even let me change timings. Just processor voltage. So, I am guessing it's already set to auto. And no, it does not post. The memory is in but it still only recognizes 1 GB even though each stick does work by itself.

Any ideas? Sorry, about to leave work in an hour and a half and would like to go pick up the correct RAM if that's the problem.
