forgive me if i didn't read through the entire text, but are you planning on actually using this windowed hard drive, or is it purely decorative? here's why i ask: hard drives are manufactured in clean rooms where there are quite nearly zero particles in the air. the tiniest speck of dust inside a drive can render it inoperable. home modifications such as these almost never end up well. you can do it with CD/DVD ROM drives fairly easily, but hard drives are a bit of a different monster altogether.

edit: watch this if you haven't yet. specifically from 3:00 on.

i had a 12GB 3.5 inch drive that i pulled the cover off of, and ran exposed as my swap drive... ran non-stop for 19 days without error... before one of my friends thought it was off and touched the read-write head causing it to fail catastrophically...

Heck yeah I plan on using this puppy! The ultimate goal of this project is both form and function. I was looking for a low cost, relatively simple (guess it depends on your definition ) project with a high Geek/Bling ratio. I thought about just painting it to match my case's color scheme, but why stop there?

I purposefully chose this drive because it was a cast off that was otherwise unused and collecting dust. If you read up earlier in the thread, I did employ the use of a make-shift Clean Room which seemed to work quite well. Plus, it's not that hard to construct a sterile glove box (it'd be worth it if you plan on doing a couple).

I don't plan on using this as a boot drive or for critical data storage - perhaps just a few MP3's so I can watch the Read/Write heads kibby out to some Drum and Bass.

I'll run a few disk diagnostics to see if the drive lives through surgery. If it's going to die, it'll do so during ScanDisk or a Zero-Fill low level formatting.

If by some chance I do toast the drive, I've got a couple more to play with until I get it right.

Just a quick text update, no pics.

I took the cover of the drive and wet sanded the top of the cover with 400, 600, and 1000 grit to remove the scratches I put in it when the cutting wheel skipped off my lines. Came out pretty well - only one is still visible on the bare metal.

I then used painter's tape to mask the back of the cover quite well. I gave it 2 coats of primer and let it cure for the weekend while I was off camping up-state. I'm back now, but it's way too humid out to do any painting today, which means my case and this will have to wait. I'm going to use the evening to wet sand the imperfections out of it and my case components.

Tomorrow will be devoted to sourcing out the LED's and Resistors for lighting this puppy up, but I'm not going to hold my breath - I'm at the mercy of the local RatShack.. Hopefully I'll be able to get some pics up tomorrow.

Here's a shot of the cover drying after its second clear coat. I ran out of wire coat hangers to suspend the parts but since the back didn't get any spray I was able to set it down on my bike without risking the coat.

Working on getting a pic now that the clear coat has had enough time to dry... will edit in a few minutes...

2 Coats Rustoleum Automotive Primer (Dark Grey)
2 Coats Rustoleum Metallic Cobalt Blue
2 Coats Rustoleum Crystal Clear Enamel

Awesome Hard Drive Bling: Priceless.

It's the same paint I'm using for the interior of my case. The thing just pops under light thanks to the clear coat.

Got shafted by the local RadioShack the other day - they had the high intensity blue LED's I wanted, but hardly a resistor to be found in the place! I've got a buddy who's training as an airplane technician & has access to all sorts of goodies ~ I gave him a list, so we'll see how that one turns out.

but it's not like you can quit half way just because of that, looking forward to seeing the completed product.

I'm starting to get concerned about the time it is taking to complete this project. With the distractions of working on my case and life in general getting in the way of modding, the days have slipped by quickly.

I have just placed an order with FrozenCpu that should arrive around the time of my birthday, late next week. Bunches of LED mod stuff, but I still have to source the resistors... I'm gonna break down and order them instead of waiting to get hooked up. It'll take less time, I'm sure.

NOTE: The Red LED stuff is for another system in the works

In the meantime, the drive - still wrapped in saran wrap, ziplocked, and boxed - will hopefully come out unscathed. I plan on giving it a light DustOff in the clean room settings when it comes time for reassembly. I hope all goes well.
