Compatibility has always been better on XP and this proves it still is.

All that prettyness and all that can stay...

you wait till Linux grabs a hold of this (which it will).

I'm slowing, but surely saying "ta ta" to windoze.

Actually, they tend to announce something to generate some buzz, put
themselves on slashdot and other pages to get a few people shell out the $50
for their "sapling" program, only to stop the whole thing with some excuse a
few months later.

First, they started as an open source project to "convert" Win32 PE binaries
to Linux ELF and MacOS binaries, and a set of libraries to give the code the
APIs it needs. Some day the project just vanished.

A little bit later on it came back as a closed source project which promised
to convert the prey demo, which uses OpenGL and doesn't need much fixup for
the api.

Later on they announced that they'd work on new d3d apps like TES:Oblivion,
etc. Eventually they ditched that for working on converting d3d10 apps.

Now they came around with their d3d10 lib for winxp. From a quick look at the
strings in the lib, they use opengl, but import only very, very basic
functions like glBegin, glVertex, glTexImage. No shader things, no
multitexturing, no vertex / index buffer things. With their function they can
only have a software renderer(which won't run any real game), or its just a
hello world d3d10 implementation which doesn't do much more than return
D3D_OK on CreateDeviceAndSwapchain(which would fit the few success/failure
reports I saw).

Look until Crysis is out (yes I know there are others) and I benchmark the game on Vista and then on this if it's real and functioning by then DX10 for XP and it's better on XP then you can bash Vista all you want, all of you. 'Till then Vista has sold more than a million copies and much more than XP did in the same timeframe. Vista has worked out most kinks and ninks by now and it's all good except maybe some driver upgrades needed lol.

This sounds like a good temp fix, but given a couple of years everything will be optimized for Vista anyway so it won't really matter. I remember when all the die hard gamers and performance nuts swore they'd never move from 2k to XP as well. Give the hardware guys enough time and Vista will be faster than XP on newer rigs. I don't expect XP to run perfectly smooth on my Duron 650 rig, and I don't expect Vista to run on my Athlon 2400 rig...it's just common sense.

As for the DX10 emulator, it may work and it may not. It may possibly be as fast as true DX10 because from what I've heard, DX10 is mostly software optimizations and it doesn't require much in the way of new hardware tech. I run both XP and Vista on this rig (dual boot). I don't use Vista much...mostly just for research and learning the ins and outs of the OS itself, but that will change once I get a full DX10 rig. I've gamed on both...Vista gets lower benchmarks on my current build but the performance decrease is barely noticeable...10 FPS or so max, and those 10 FPS don't mean much when you're running 100+.

Actually the kernel is the same... Which is a huge error made by Microsoft in my opinion. I think every operating system they release should have a kernel that improves on the previous one.

(2)That's was the best post I heard from here

I hope this works out well. I am not going to upgrade to Vista for at least another year or 2 when I really need it. XP will do me fine (even better once they release a DX10 patch to play newer games).
