Fan question

Thread Starter
Ok I have been experimenting with fans and swapping motors on them. The question is, what do you think about pulling the motor out of a high rpm 80mm fan(like the vantec tornado I have, something over 3,000 rpm) and mounting it to a 140mm fan. I am worried that one thing is the 140mm can't handle that kind of rpm. Vibration, and of coarse the fan throwing itself apart....I can't find 140mm fan with more than 76ish cfm. I have the ability to mount a 140mm fan to the front of my case which would increase airflow to my harddrives is why I want to do this.

I would just try it. It's indeed gonna vibrate and make loud noise. But it's worth the try, otherwise you never know

No it could be worse than that, my gentials could take the wound. Well what makes me think about it is that I am sitting her now with a gash in my hand from my zalman9700 that I got to close to, so figured I would see what people thought.

try it, and wear ball-protectors XD

It won't spin up to its full speed and will probably not be stable

I'm not saying don't do it - just telling you what to expect. Even though it will not rev up to whatever the 80mm's speed is it will go higher than its rated. That alone will make it unstable (and noisy as hell) but give you very nice airflow I'd expect. If that's what you're going for - go for it

I would just try it with some kind of shield just incase it decides to break apart because of the high rpms.

I don't see the point... The 80mm fan motor was designed and optimized with a certain weight parameter in mind. It's like putting a Porsche engine in a pickup truck. It should work, but not effectively since the design parameters are different. Why not just get a faster fan?
