I have ArcticSilver5 and the Zalman 9500.

I'd also like for you to notice...my volts are actually undervolted. It runs 1.35v stock. I'm running 1.325v right now.

Now I have gotten it up to 2.7GHz...but it required 1.5v which was WAY too much with my current cooling, lol. If I can reduce these temps though, I can prolly hit 2.7-2.8 with this baby. Please help. I'll give someone reps (I think that's right) if they can show me how to do it, and help me fix this, lol. I know......overclock.net noob, lol. Thanks for any help guys!

It could be that it just might be an issue with Vista not playing nice with your temperature reporting programs. I've read reports regarding Vista and CoreTemp issues. Some SpeedFan users also report the same.

Have you tried using Everest for temperature monitoring?

Hope this helps!

Here's an experiment that's supposed to test your airflow: Try running your system with the case open. If there's an improvement in temperature just from that, then your cooler isn't getting enough air with the case closed up.

Hope this helps!

Lapping usually helps; it helped with one of my Opterons and Ultra 120 Extreme. Is it difficult? Not really difficult; it's more time-consuming and demanding in terms of elbow grease.

There are plenty of accounts of lapping here on OCN (including mine! ). A simple search will yield many answers!

Hope this helps.

what is the stepping of your CPU? If its an LDBFE you are in the same boat as me, there's not much you can do - these chips just run very hot

Ok, well I have no idea where I can find the stepping I have. Not really THAT in depth into overclocking yet, lol. Also, I used to use PC Probe, Everest, Speedfan, and CoreTemp when I had XP. Same temperatures. It's not Vista that's causing bad temps. I JUST switched to Vista yesterday...so I know that's not the problem. I'm almost wondering if I have a bad temp sensor or something. Is that a possiblity? This rig has ALWAYS ran hot. In speedfan when I first built it....it said 75*C on idle in XP. But I haven't had ANY heat related issues yet...but I have never let it get past that 75 mark. When I saw that, I immediately shut down, and applied AS5 and re attached the HSF. That dropped it down to 65, 75 load. Then I got the Zalman 9500, which has dropped it to where it is now (approx. 50-55 idle, 65-70 load). I read the reviews on newegg when I bought it...EVERYONE was saying they were getting like 40*C top on load. Am I the only one having these kinds of problems, lol. It sure feels like it.

Also...case airflow is fine. Actually, there is NO temp difference if the side is on or off. I hope thats a good sign, lol. I know I could invest in better case fans (currently running Apevia fans...should upgrade to Thermaltake), but I'm trying to find a cheap way out. I just invested in the Zalman...which that really set me back. Hope this helps you guys help me, lol.

Thanks for the help so far guys. And if its possible....if you think you've helped me so far, send me a private message, and I'll add some reputation points. I don't really feel like reading through all the posts again to see who's helped, lol. I'm lazy like that....but I'd be happy to do it if you want the points, lol. I don't really care too much...I'm just wanting to get this problem resolved, and help anyone else that I can. That's my goal here on OCN.

Ahh, ok. Yeah I don't really feel like pulling it apart until I know what I need to do to cool it better. Like I've said many times already....its already undervolted (because it doesn't need more volts to be stable), I have AS5 on it, Zalman 9500 cooler....I'm out of ideas to cool this stupid thing. I'm seriously thinking about selling this machine and putting together an X2 3600 Brisbane. The only thing though, if I sell it...I want to be able to get 2 monitors with my next machine, a 19" and 22" widescreen, lol. Which that should be somewhat easy on craigslist considering I spent about $2000 on this build total back in March.

$2k? It's sickening how fast prices can come down isnt it? You could build a Core 2 Quad with an 8800 for that easily now

I have a simialr setup, even the same CPU cooler as you, and I too have heat issues like that, well I did till I switched to my A900. From what I can tell you from my day apon day of searching the web is these a8n32-sli boards run hot. What I suggest you do is check with your over volting setting in the bios. From what I remeber if it is disabled this board will still try and add the .2V to the cpu which could be why you are seeing such high temps. For my OC I run 1.25 with overvolt and I idle at 40C and hit 53C max under load. You can also try and redo the heat pipe system using this guide: how to reseat your A8N32-SLI heat pipes
I hope this stuff helps.

Lapping...is the bottom of your Zalman smooth, or can you see the machineing groove? if you can, then you should lap it. and check if your IHS is flat by using a razor blade and holding it up to the light. if you can see thight through it, you should either lap or take off the IHS...that should drop about 7C off your CPU temps
