Socket 939 Athlon X2 3800+ OC Problems - Page 3

Ok, so according to my understanding here, lapping a CPU is pretty much using sandpaper and sanding it down real smooth? And by doing so to my CPU and Zalman...I should see a significant decrease in temps? I'm definately going to have to do this. I'd like to see 1.6v come out of this thing. Because with it running 1.6v, I can hit 2.8GHz easy with it from what I can tell. My only problem is cooling, which is still a problem even at stock speeds and undervolted. So that's why I'm interested in lapping.

Now if I remove the IHS off my CPU...how is my Zalman going to mount? With the IHS removed, isn't that going to make the CPU sit lower in the socket? And if it sits lower, the Zalman won't mount right? Am I correct in this? If so, how do I make it sit right? I'm interested in just removing the IHS if that's a possibility. My Zalman is mirror smooth already (from the factory). So I figure if I just remove the IHS, that'd save me a lot of time attempting to lap it....to give me more time to tinker with speeds and voltages!

Any more help on possibly removing the IHS? By the way...I may have already said this, but anyway...thanks a lot guys. If this goes well like you guys are saying...you guys are LIFESAVERS (well CPU life savers, lol). I don't know though, I might just get pissed off at this X2 3800 and sell it. Get myself an Opteron 165. I don't know how much I could resell an X2 3800+ 939 chip for though. I'd have to check into that.

VALUE RAM SUCKS..........I traded mine for some G.Skill 400MHz DDR 2.8GHz np

2nd

As stated zalmans love airy cases !!!!!

3rd

Use good thermal compound but not alot only about enough to fit on the tip of your pinky.

4th

If you haven't already reseat your HSF

5th

pray

You should be able to hit 2.8 on air at about 1.48 Vcore but 2.7 at 1.38 is way cooler and more stable .......2.7 @ 1.425 yielded 48c at 100% load on both core simultaneously which i am happy with!

BTW......... This cpu's max die temp is 71c

Instead of posting a new thread, decided to repost this one. So just in case anyone's curious....I'm thinking about going Opteron 165 or 170. However, I think I'm now stable at 2.60GHz. Been running Orthos for about 12 minutes so far. Tried at 2.65 with higher voltage, and my machine just shut off out of nowhere. So dropped it back down to 2.60 with 1.42v, just started running Orthos, we'll see how it goes. To the guy with a VERY similar setup to mine....what the hell did you set EVERYTHING to in your BIOS? The BIOS in this board is unlike anything I've ever seen before, which is prolly limiting my OC. I have no idea what to adjust on the RAM, no idea if I should overvolt anything...I mean its completely foreign to me. Maybe you could share some wisdom on me on what settings you tweaked to get yours to 2.8? Maybe mine will get that high, and I'm just a noob overclocker that thought he was better? I'll PM you as well, to ask the same thing, just in case you don't read this thread again. Thanks for the help so far guys.

Current OC (we'll see about stability)
260fsb x 10 multi
1.45v (speedfan reports 1.42)
1040 HT Link
Corsair ValueRAM is running at 173MHz (all auto timings)
overvolted HT since its running higher than 1000MHz (no idea how high tho)
According to cpuz running 2T Command rate (no idea if it should be 1 or 2)

Pretty much everything's set to auto...here's what I did change:
260fsb
1.45v
10x multiplier
4x HT Link (to get 1040MHz)
Overvolt HT Link enabled

Other than that, my BIOS is completely factory (auto) because I have no idea what to manually set anything to.

Also....currently been running Orthos for 9 minutes, I've hit 59*C load at 2600MHz. Any pointers from other owners of this board/cpu combo?

Ok, correction. After approx. 15 minutes of Orthos at 2.6GHz....my machine shuts off randomly. I go to turn it on....nothing. Have to wait a few minutes b4 it turns back on. So I said screw it, and clocked it back to stock but undervolted in the BIOS since my board overvolts automatically. Hopefully it'll stay stable now. I'm getting really ticked off at this build. I want to just throw it out the window! GRRRRRR! I really hope getting the Opty is going to help. By the way, I can't even hit 2.5 anymore without it shutting off randomly.
