X1950XT overclocking

Thread Starter
Hi all

I have recently bought a Dell E521 with Vista 32bit and installed a x1950xt. As the Dell PSU wasnt powerful enough i added a Thermaltake Power Express 250W. The results off 3dmark06 were disappointing and i am not sure where the problem is. Could it be the CPU, vista drivers or that i just havnt overclocked it to its full potential?

When i go into the ATI overdrive section i ran the automated clock configuration and it set the values as seen in the attachment below. Can someone explain to me if i am able to alter these to improve performance?

The 3dmark06 test and scored 5804 which on a graph of other similar systems showed me pretty low. TESTS 3 and 4 hardly ran at all (i think they were CPU tests). Now i didnt think my CPU was that bad (X2 5600+ 2.8) so why am i getting such poor results. Counter-strike stress test gives me 189.9 fps which im told is pretty good.

I am looking at a replacement cooler for the x1950xt, but i am very limited on space in the E521 Case, i have already had to mod the stock cooler and the PCI-Express bays to fit the card in. Someone suggested a HR 3 but i dont think it will fit, i was looking at one of the Zalman's as they are quiet and keep the GPU a lot cooler at full load. OR am i just wasting money when the orignal stock cooler will do fine!

Im running the most uptodate Catalyst version 7.5 i think

Thank you for your patience in advance,

Danny

Slow CPU tests are completely normal. Your GPU is about 100-300 times better than a CPU to do such calculations

Welcome back to the forum... looks like you haven't been here for a while. The X1950XT is a great card (i know, i have one).

While overcloccking the GFX card is a possibility, you would need to get a better PSU than that to handle it (500W+). Thermaltake is a good brand, so you picked the brand well, it's just that 225W is just enough.

As has already been said, the cpu tests will be slow. The CPU isn't built to do the same thing that the GPU does. If the CPU could do what the GPU does, then we wouldn't have graphics cards.

That score isn't too bad. At stock on my GPU and with my processor running at 2.7 i get maybe 100 more than you do, which can be attributed to me having better ram.

You should be good enough with that cooler. If you're going to spend money, I'd seriously look into a more powerful PSU (but don't sacrifice quality for power). Those drivers are good.... if you really want to play around with drivers, check into Modded Drivers (Warcat is the only one i remember right now)

Hope that helps

Thanks very much for the information!

The thermaltake Power Express http://www.thermaltake.com/product/P...0099/w0099.asp runs insync with the original PSU, so wouldnt this be enough? Well surely it is enough because it switches on and hasnt cut out at all? Does the extra power give you better performance stats?

The Zalman VF900CU doesn't cool that well for X1950XT, it's on par with the stock cooling. I'd recommend the Accelero X2. That graphics card PSU should be enough, if I recall the X1950XT pulls 115W at load. The extra power will not give you better performance (speed wise), but it will allow your system to run more stable than if you were to use just the dell psu. You can get that extra power to help you get better performance by overclocking though .

How do you know that Futuredrifter? The 1900 series has even higher heat output and the lowly VF700 does a better job than stock on my littl e bro's 1900XT.

I tried the VF900CU out and the temps were still hanging around stock cooler temps at full load. 5 days after I got the VF900CU I had ordered a Tide Water to replace it.

The VF700 doesn't have heatpipes making it better than the VF900 for X1900XT/XTX series, except for the PROs (which generate less heat than the XTs/XTXs).

Quote:
Performance wise the AcceleroX2 and the VF900CU perform almost the same (leave the VF700ALCU/CU out for now please), on the X1950PRO, however differences appear when you install this on the X1950XT and X1950XTX, why? Well checking the performance of fellow TPU'ers point out that the VF900CU is better at taking lower TDPs when compared to the AcceleroX2. What does this mean? For the X1950PROs, the VF900CU performs a bit better, whilst on the R580+ (X1950XT, XTX) the VF900CU fails to outperform the stock cooler, while the AcceleroX2 delivers good performance. To explain this, the AcceleroX2 has more surface area to dissipate heat, while the VF900CU has less, also, the heatpipes have cycles and when it gets too hot, the cycles slow down and the heat transfer worsens. Since there is no direct contact between the copper fins and the base for the VF900CU, the heatpipe's slowing/less heat transfer begins to heat it up (its not so severe at it sounds though). The AcceleroX2 does not have such a problem as the aluminium fins are in direct contact with the base, you have to consider the fact that Aluminium transfers heat much faster whilst Copper stores more but sucks at transfer; there is a drawback in the minimilistic usage of material for the VF900CU.
Shamelessly stolen from Tech Power Up forums from, I googled cooling for a X1950XT, when I very dissastisfied with my VF900Cu.
