I don't see games getting quad-core capable till native comes out.
And even then- it's still backwards compatible.

Even if the new q6600 has G0... most boards can't do it.
There are only a few boards that can post big FSB with a quad.
And even then- the heat issues. Too much involved in fixing that one!
I wanted a q6600- till I researched it more.

Also, you mentioned... the background crap. lol.
I think that was a good argurement for a single --> dual upgrade.
But any dual core idles windows REAL well
Processors are just so much better now, the "background crap" is sort of a thing of the past. If you have a C2D and too much going on in the background, ie bad idle... time to defrag and use some spyware remover

Was that directed at me? I haven't ordered my rig quiet yet. I'm thinking of waiting until the July 22nd Price Drop and then pick up an E6600. I will never use Quad Cores; hell, I don't even game that much. I play Command and Conquer: 3, Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and World of Warcraft. An 8800GTX will play all of those games with amazing FPS (minimum of 75 anyone?).

After I get my Sig Rig I will be getting another 2GB of Ram, 64-Bit Vista, and maybe a Q6600.

Heh, I know what you mean. I'm really banking on going with the Q6600 in July, as I just sold my 680i SE board that didn't support Quad core OCing. I also have a tendancy to say I'll upgrade as soon as the next big thing hits, and then find myself 3 years down the road with the same system I started with (See sig). I figure with a quad I'll be somewhat more futureproofed for games that utilize 4 cores, even though my clock will be in the ~3ish range.

Anyways I'll be grabbing a Q6600, Dual-Core is so last week
To the above, and all the rest wondering about currently-out CPU's and their prices, i've found (actually bluedevil found) the answer i've been looking for for over a week.

Intel will suspend landing orders for five 1066MHz FSB CPUs, including E6600, E6700, E6300, E6320 and E6420, by late 2007. Final delivery schedule is set as the first quarter of 2008, the sources detailed.

Anyways, the E6750 also has the G0 stepping correct? If so, i'm all over that puppy. E6850 is just out of reach, considering I want a good board.

well i'm glad i didn't wait for the price cut because i bought mine back in may and everyone told me the prices were going to drop, but i feel like i had a good amount of time using my processor before the price change and it was worth it.

THAT'S WHERE OVERCLOCKING COMES IN! OMFGBBQSAUCE YES!

Day 1: Overclock the Q6600 to E6850 speeds. Mission accomplished. Hell to the yes.

weeks later: What's that? Multi-threaded games? More applications are using quad-cores? Games are utilizing L2 cache more now? Get these games and applications now!

Now it is time to laugh at everyone who bought that E6850.

I think I'll be going the cheap route, the 6420 oughtta tide me till cheap native quads. With better clocking quad-ready boards
It will be nice that 6420 at 4300's price after July

I understand the logic, but you also need to take into account that you could OC the 6850 to something like 4Ghz on air, and burn the Quad sitting at a measily 3Ghz.

That being said, I'm not even considering the 6850 as an option
