My little IHS experiment...

I'm at work, its a little slow...

I pulled the IHS from a 1.6 Pentium socket 478. And also had a identical CPU that I left the IHS on.

I used a cheap ass aluminum heatsink and a copper heatsink.

The CPU with the IHS was about the same giver take a few degrees with both heatsinks.
The CPU without the IHS was about 5C hotter with the copper heatsink (compared to the other CPU with the same heatsink of course).
The CPU without the IHS was about 13+C hotter with the aluminum heatsink.

I have not concluded anything. Mainly because I'm not getting very scientific, I'm just bored at work. But this was interesting...

sounds like you may ahve applied to much paste on the w/o IHS, or one is a better batch that runs cooler

I was thinking the IHS CPU gets better temps because it has more surface area to dissipate the heat...

So maybe a high quality heatsink would make the CPU lacking the IHS get better temps.

You can't compare two CPUs since they are not identical. Their temperature and performance will never be exactly the same. All testing has to be done with one CPU. In addition, you need to run the same tests multiple times to remove error due to differences in thermal interface material application.

I managed to gain a 50MHz overclock after removing my IHS. Everything else remained the same. I reapplied the TIM at least 8 times with the IHS on and only could get 2646Mhz. I removed the IHS and reapplied the TIM 4 times... can now get 2700MHz stable each time.

I thought maybe that the IHS actually creates an even surface to contact the HSF? Because without the IHS the CPU looks pretty uneven. Not to mention wouldn't contacting the CPU directly with a HS damage it?

Nope, the IHS is not flat. This is why lapping it helps drop temps. The CPU die is actually very smooth. The die touching the HSF will not damage it unless you chip the die. No IHS means you removed TWO additional layers that decreased theremal efficency. The first would be the TIM under the IHS and the second would the IHS itself.

I always wanted to ask. Will it show a bit difference it temps if you lap it till its like a mirror and if you lap it with like a 500 sandpapr which will not be even close to be a mirror.

COMMENTS?
You can't compare "identical" CPUs or even two of the same exact CPU. All CPUs are different. My 3800 X2 idles at 15C and loads at around 34C. Other's 3800 X2's idle at 30 and load at 40 with lower clocks than me and with same BT cooling.

If your going to test IHS, test the same chip with and then without the IHS.
