Grats on the monitor, and get the GTX if you're looking for long lifespan with best performance.

Get the 8800GTS.

If it can even remotely fit into your budget, it would just be stupid to get the 8600.

I love my 320. It has no problem playing any game at 1680x1050 ultra settigns minus full AA, usually 2xAA will do the trick.

had the similar problem the other day. got me a 8800gts 320mb. the advice i got was if you can afford it , get the 640mb - it will be better for VERY HIGH SCREEN RESOLUTIONS. other than that the 320 should be better than adequate. I figured the extra £50 or so to step up to 640mb probably not worth it for my needs, but im me and your you.

That typically happens, gaming tends to feel better at a higher res, so it wouldn't shock me.
