Boy, I would build you a killer system, but I have had a long day. Bottom line, with 1k to spend, go Core 2 Duo with G.skill HZ 800mhz DDR2. Also for Video go big or go home 8800 series NO LESS!

For memory you might also get Crucial Ballistix instead, there very good also.

I don't know the prices by heart , and i've also been out of the scene for a bit(exams....) but i bought some mags and i think this woyld fit your budget.
Asus P5K
E6420
2GB DDR2 800(doesn't need to be some super-overclockable model, but the 2 gigs are essential)
GeForce 8600GTS or a 8800GTS if available for less than 40$ more(IMO).
2x250GB hd's for raid(western digital or seagate's are the best)
Sound Blaster Audigy SE ( it's worthy, makes a good diffrence in CS and music sounds better)
And get some good fans if you're gonna use stock cooling...(i'm tired of the fans noise, i'm gonna get some new fans myself, i also use stock cooling

You should go Intel Core 2 Duo definitely

Here's a build:

Cooler Master Centurion 5 ($50)
Corsair HX520W PSU ($70 after MIR and Google Checkout @ Buy.com)
Gigabyte P35 DS3R ($130)
Intel Core 2 Duo e2160 ($92) OC and save for G0 steppings
2 GB G.skill HZ DDR2-800 $110 (This specific one)
eVGA 8800GTS 320MB - $270
Thermaltake Big Typhoon (Original) $45

Total - About $770 w/o shipping You can spend the rest on Vista, KB/mouse etc. You can opt for a prettier case, but the CM5 is very easy to work with

edit: whoops forgot the HDs! Add a 250GB Samsung for $70
