Manhunt 2 on Temp Hold

Manhunt 2 Temporarily On Hold

Quote:
Manhunt 2 was supposed to be released on July 10 for Wii, PlayStation 2 and PSP. That will no longer be happening, as Take-Two Interactive announced they have "temporarily suspended" the release of Manhunt 2, in light of decisions made this week by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board and British Board of Film Classification and Entertainment Software Rating Board.
The former essentially stopped them from releasing the game in the US, the latter banning it outright. No word on what steps the company will be taking to remedy the situation, but modifying the violent content to hit a Mature rating seems the most likely scenario.

"We continue to stand behind this extraordinary game. We believe in freedom of creative expression, as well as responsible marketing, both of which are essential to our business of making great entertainment," said the company in a statement about the change.

Similar to what we heard yesterday, Take-Two remains confident about the game and its reflection of modern horror cinema.

"We firmly believe that parents and consumers, once informed as to the nature of any entertainment product, should be able to make their own choices. I have reviewed Manhunt 2 myself," said Take Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick. "It fits squarely within the horror genre and was intended to do so. It brings a unique, formerly unheard-of cinematic quality to interactive entertainment. It is also a fine piece of art. I stand behind it fully."
The Road to Manhunt 2 Wii

Quote:
So far, Nintendo and Sony have remained quiet about Manhunt 2 specifically, but yesterday reiterated their policy that AO titles are not welcome on their platforms. The path to Manhunt's existence on the Wii platform, however, is interesting, given Harrison's above comment is a direct shot at Rockstar's bread and butter. Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime started publicly courting the company a few months before the launch of Wii last Fall:

"We're reaching out to every publisher, frankly every day. I'll be spending some time later today with the folks over at Take Two to see what type of support they can give our console. ... The fact is there will be M-rated content on the Wii console. EA has already announced that they're bringing 'The Godfather' to our console. And we want every single best-selling game to be available on Wii. Whatever that content is." -- MTV
Talks continued in the proceeding months, with Fils-Aime laying down the gauntlet in December 2006:

"Nintendo has done all it can to persuade Take-Two Interactive Software to bring the Grand Theft Auto franchise to Nintendo consoles, and it is now up to the third party publisher to decide whether Rockstar Games' immensely popular series will appear on Wii." -- Game Head
Quote:
On the ESRB website, the organization says their ratings "should inform and suggest, not prohibit," yet the AO tag for Manhunt 2 means it cannot be published on PlayStation 2, PSP or Wii and many retailers specifically exclude sales of games carrying that rating. There's a much larger industry question in need of answering, but to say Manhunt 2 hasn't been prohibited is debatable.

So Nintendo WANTED this yet they won't license it....PATHETIC

The ESRB has clearly broken their own rules by prohibiting Manhunt 2's fully uncensored release and forcing it to be censored.

I am Freaking pissed now. I preordered the AO Rated game, and that's *** i want

"Take-Two's decision to temporarily suspend distribution of Manhunt 2 is a victory for parents and children," the statement reads. "Because of the their thoughtful decision to give Manhunt 2 its strongest rating, 'Adults Only,' the ESRB has sent a strong message to Take-Two and other game makers that they no longer can push the envelope on gratuitous violence in videogames. The ESRB showed real leadership in assigning this rating and further evidence it is making significant progress in keeping extremely violent and graphic materials out of children's hands."

NIMF is apparently keeping a close eye on other upcoming games that could prove controversial.

"Hopefully Take-Two has learned from its Manhunt 2 experience and will undertake preventive measures to ensure its future games, including Grand Theft Auto IV, are appropriate for families and gamers."

Even though it is the organization's mission to inform consumers as to the content in videogames, NIMF seems a little misinformed as it refers to Manhunt 2 as a "first-player shooter." The title is a third-person action game.

"As gaming technology continues to change, we hope to continue to work with the ESRB to ensure that future games have appropriate content and context for children. The uniqueness of Nintendo's Wii gives game raters a new challenge when it comes to first-player shooter games. We take the ESRB's decision about Manhunt 2 as a positive step in addressing this new challenge."

NIMF confirmed to IGN that the organization has not played the game, and it is basing its decision that the title is unfit for release on the same trailers we have all seen (which don't show any gameplay that is more violent than numerous past games). What is particularly alarming to the Institute is the Wii control which allows players to act out the gruesome killings with the Wiimote.
This is Pathetic...These games are NOT for Families, but ADULTS. So there should be no censoring....These people are fighting for Families rights yet this has nothing to do with Families or Children, it is for 18 and up ONLY, and is clearly marketed that way...

I find it hard to believe Nintendo wanted GTA on the Wii. They had to release a censored version of Res 4... -_-

I'm just not seeing what makes this game so great. I see why it is so controversial, but it doesn't look like that great of a game to me.

So I'm guessing no one at Sony or Nintendo played Manhunt 1?

"We will make the Wiimote sensitive to just how the victim is killed."
"By killed you mean popped open and candy will come out?"
"No let's say I wanted to use this ice cream scoop on the testicles of my victim..."
"Testicles, don't you mean you're going to break bricks with your head and collect coins?"
"Uhm... you have seen the first Manhunt right?"
