I was once just like you. I thought $25 was a lot to spend on headphones, and then a few years ago I got a pair of Senn PMX200's that cost me about $50, and was amazed by how much better my mp3's sounded. This led me down the path of wondering 'if this is what $50 sounds like, what dose $100 sound like?' lol. Then I got a used pair of Senn HD595's for $125 and was blown away by how good my music and games sounded. I got a LDM+ headphone amp that I could use both at home and on the go. A few months later I built a maxed PIMETA desktop amp. Since then I've tried several different amp/can combinations. I've bought cans just to listen to them and then sold them a month later It was all done for the pure joy of listening to music. I've also gotten into classical and jazz music, as well as rock/alternative. (and other genres) There's nothing like putting in your favorite disc and listening to the music come alive. you get a silly grin on your face and you're sky high (in a good way)

My most recent purchase was a slightly used SinglePower PPX3 6CG7 headphone amp. I paid $425 shipped, and that was a steal! I've since rounded out to about $500 with some various tubes to roll to see what I like best. Sound is not only a hobby, but a drive.
Worst part is, I totally see myself doing that. lol. Yeah, I'm starting to really get into music. I love it. Downloading (legally, btw) everything and anything just to listen to it and enjoy it. I just need to find a decent headset (preferrably, if I have to go with just 'phones, I can do that)

Getting big into good sounding music, that's what I want to do.

my advice to you would be to download lossless formats if you can. Or better yet just buy the CD. I'm a member of yourmusic, 6.99 CD's w/ free shipping. it doesn't get much better than that.

I only say this because I've gotten to the point where I don't listen to my lesser quality mp3's at all anymore. I've got a lot of good music, but they aren't good quality.

If you want to join yourmusic send me a PM and I'll get u a code.

Well, first I want to take care of the hardware. The next step after is buying CDs, which is something I've been wanting to do for a while, just haven't had a chance to. Right now I'm unemployed but I should have a job in the next couple weeks and I have enough to pick up a nice pair of 'phones soon as I know I have a job.

I took soloz2's advice about 6 months ago, and got Senn HD555. While I'm still on integrated, I've had a lot of fun playing with equalizers. Bass is decently clear, and you don't have to turn them up to get the little details. ~$110 on Amazon, new.

You'll need a Zalman clip-on mic, which is surprisingly good! You shouldn't have any trouble getting clear vocals on that, unless your computer has a lot of fans (you'll want to turn those down...I can still hear mine; the HD555's are open, so I can hear most everything going on around me).

HD555 + Zalman is a very quality setup (happy meal for audiophiles lol). I don't know anything about ATH A500's though. Go do some research. headphonereviews.org or such.
