Any performance advantage to using a WD1200BEVS for the OS?

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I am just building my new system and I have a HD501LJ 500GB as the only HD.

I also have a spare, new WD1200BEVS (2.5" 5400rpm 120GB).

Would there likely to be any performance advantage installing the WD1200BEVS as well?

I don't need the space, I have plenty of external storage.

I guess that converting video might be quicker as one drive can read while the other writes, but other than that, but how much better, and would anything else run faster?

I was thinking about putting the OS (XP) and programs on the WD1200BEVS and data and docs on the HD501LJ.

Or would I get better performance running the OS and programs on the HD501LJ and only using the WD1200BEVS for converting data?

I guess the WD1200BEVS will be slower to read and write than the HD501LJ, so is it worth using at all?

Thanks for any ideas,

Steve.

You'd get a performance boost by setting the swap file on the non-OS drive. It doesn't help by a massive amount, but if the drive is just laying around I'd do it to put it to use.

if it's usable use it.
like mojo said , use it for the swap file.
ANd you can also use it for stuff that you don't use much , so the other drive doesn't get cluttered.

OK thanks guys.

If I put the OS on the slower 2.5" WD1200BEVS drive, would I notice a loss of performance versus having the OS on the faster 3.5" HD501LJ ?

Yes. Put the OS on the fastest drive.

OK. Is there point in using the WD1200BEVS then, other than faster video conversion? And even then, how much faster?

Thanks.

I wouldn't use it. If the drive you have now is faster, moving the page file to a slower drive will cause slower performance. Video conversion will not be any faster. Adding a second drive will allow for more storage but that is all.
