Getting the most from my E6600?

Thread Starter
ok, ive got my system built. currently ive got the cpu at 3.1 ghz. i know itll get more.

i have an L712A stepping e6600, the rest of my specs are in my profile. for now ive just upped the fsb.

here are my settings.

ai tune- manual
cpu freq-340 (ddr2 1020)
pci freq.- auto
spread spectrum-auto
mem voltage- 2.0v
cpu volt 1.30v
fsb term volt-auto
nb core-1.40
sb core-auto
ich chipset volt-auto

cpu multi-enabled
c1e-disabled
9X multi

now ive left all the ram timing stock, ram timings on auto. what would you guys say i need to do to get it to 3.2 ghz? id be happy with that.... should i up my ram voltage , and what would be the highest i could go? 2.2v? also i know i can up my vcore and northbridge a bit too.... im just letting it burn in for a while at these settings, and letting the AS5 cure.

im pretty sure ill get a new waterblock for the cpu too. but ill wait and see. it may not be necessary, as the tdx i adapted seems to be working pretty well so far.

when i tried to push the fsb to 345, it wouldnt boot, and i dont know if the timings are 1:1 or what. when i up the fsb in the asus bios, the ram speed (Dram Freq) goes up, its at 1020 right now..... i know i can squeeze a bit more out of it, i still have alot of settings on auto, im just not sure which ones to play with.

after work today, i will start dropping my vcore step by step to see how low i can run it at these settings.... as i feel running vcore higher than it needs to be is a waste?

any input would be appreciated, id sure like to get 'er to 3.2 or 3.4 if i could.

and ill just say, this new E6600 with the OCZ (DDR2)ram sure kicks the crap outta my old 2400+ mobile athlon with one gig of kingston ddr....! after 8+ years as a amd guy, ive defected to Intel!

In my experience, I lowered the multiplier to 8, and gradually increased the FSB until I got to 400 (1600). This ran my RAM at 1:1 ratios (800MHz), and my CPU at a decent 3.2GHz. Had to up the Vcore a little, you probably will too. I might go higher, haven't tried multi of 9 x 400 to get 3.6GHz yet.

About the RAM voltage... I'd run at stock Voltage (should be somewhere in the Specs for your RAM), and tighten the timings if you aren't overclocking the RAM past it's stated speed.

Oh, and make sure you are running stability tests after each increase in speed. Like OCCT or Orthos.... With an E6600 you can usually increase in quite large increments when you start out, then taper off a little (smaller increments) when you get higher, like over 3GHz or so.

hmmm.... ill try the 8X400 after work! ill also go into the ram area of the bios and set the timing to the stock #'s, i think its 5-5-5-12 on this ocz special ops, and see if theres a ratio setting (1:1)

id love to see 3.2 ghz 24/7.

ill also install my window unit ac in the pc room, the ambient temp is way to friggin hot right now.

thanks for the input, and keep 'em coming!

Oh, I'm still using my cheap transcend ram too. 8^)

thanks for the input!

i have lowered my multi to 8X, fsb 400, so its at 3.2 right now! i changed my ram timings to match my sticks and am running them at 1:1 right now.

its funny though, a couple proggys,(sisoft, 3dmark) show it as 3.6..... although its not.

i may try and up the fsb a bit more yet, i dunno.

i also rebotted a few times and actually dropped my vcore, its at 1.392 right now.

my idle temps are 44-41 (speedfan), and my ambient temps are HOT. i need to install my window unit ac this weekend......

im sure i can squeeze a bit more outta this thing.

Nice work man. Yeah, ambient temps are important to keep in mind as well. Heck, when my AC cycles on/off (full blast all the time is just too darn cold), my temps change about 3-5C.

If you want to get up to 3.6GHz, I'd leave the Multi the same (because I believe you're using 1000MHz RAM). Your board should be able to handle 450x8 as long as cooling is good. If you can get up to this, your RAM will almost be at full potential (900MHz) at a 1:1 ratio. This is what I'd shoot for in your case. Good luck!

Remember to Stress test that thing too... make sure it's running stable!
