New guy here with 4400+ brisbane

Hello,

Just got a new rig. It's been 6 years since i bought my last computer. Been reading up on the forums but still quite confused about overclocking but very interested in doing so.

I understand most of the terminology and concepts, but there are a few things i'm unclear with.
HT link? <--- don't know what this is, but from what I read, approx 1000 is ok.
CPU/RAM Ratio, FSB/RAM Divider, etc - w/ AMD boards, a ratio of 1 (1:1, 3/3, 4/4, 5/5 ?? <--- i don't understand this, i don't have any divider option in my bios. Do i just use the ram setting 400/533/667/800 instead ???

What i've done so far is use the AI overlock to push it 10%. Ram is set to 667. FSB runs at 220 and my ram goes up to 366(i think...). Temps still very low so i think i can go higher. (I'll post some screens tonight with more details.)

My goal is to get the best possible peformance for gaming, and some video editing. Problem is, i'm not sure what i should be aiming for . I've seen many post where the FSB is upped as much a possible, while the memory speed to lowered. But why have a lower memory speed???

Anyway, here's the rig...hope you guys can shed some light.

Keep an eye on the temps, that's the secret.

As for dividers, the 1:1 was on Socket A systems. You can run dividers like crazy on the new systems no problem.

HT is just your FSB x HT multi. The default multi is x5 or x4, so just lower the multi and you'll be fine for more FSB.

Looks like a good rig, might need some cooling, but that's easily fixed.

Do all your OCing in the BIOS and run memtest (test #5 mainly, #7 and #8 are also good ones to run) to test the memory and OCCT to check CPU/overall system stability.

Welcome to OCN!

Welcome! Just for starters until everybody starts waking up and posting today, DON'T use the AI overclock utility or any other os-based overclocking utility for your cpu or ram. You should only oc these from your bios because of stability issues. The only oc utility I have ever found to be any good was the graphics card overclocking utilities (AtiTool or nTune) which are actually excellent when used correctly.
First off download SpeedFan here:http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
Use it to monitor your temps whenever overclocking. You don't want to smoke anything in your nice new rig before you get a chance to see what it can REALLY do.
I'll post up some more basic stuff when I get a chance seeing as I'm in work right now.

Thanks guys...

I just used AI overclock as a starting point to see what numbers cpu-z would give me. But i'm ready to start tweaking away.

Will get memtest and speedfan tonight...

A bit more on the HT...
It's default is 5x200MHz the 200MHz is the Default CPU bus speed and as the CPU bus speed is increased so is the overall HT!
AM2 systems seem to like an ovewrall HT in the 1200MHz range. The low 1300 range seem to bring the instability and for some it appears the 1200 range improves overall OCing, go figure!
So reduce the default HT 5x as necessary to keep below 1300.

The RAM dividers or Ratios... deep.
Like the DDR, DDR2 is effected by the CPUs bus speed and at some point the RAMs default speed and accelerate beyond its stable abilities. To over come this there are voltage increases and timing adjustments. When those options run out the only other means of ataining stability are the Dividers!
Note, I say divider because thats what everyone refer to them as and ...
Not only does the RAM start out at a lower "default" speed, but the RAMs bus speed only increases at that ratio to the CPU bus increases.
Example, if the RAM was set to a DDR2 667 from the default DDR2 800 it's default speed is reduced about 83%. Therfore, the RAM only increases about 83% of each 1 MHz the CPU bus is increased. I say about because there are slight variations to this due to the CPUs multiplyer that is being used.

Don't forget Orthos and OCCt to test for stability

i think i reached my limit at 235, anything above i get bsod. Seem pretty poor. Even tried upping the voltage to 1.3 and 1.4 (scared to go higher). Not sure what else i should try.

Check out the screens.

If i undestand correctly, the 2nd screen should give me better performance, right?

make sure you have the latest bios in that board...

drop trfc down to 105 or 127 if you dont have that option drop trc down to 26 or so ...
