Blu-Ray Rotting Defect?

A small group of Blu-ray Disc owners have discovered a manufacturing defect in the disc that renders the media virtually unplayable. As noted by members of the AVS Forum, the movie most commonly affected by the defect is The Prestige, from Buena Vista Home Entertainment (BVHE).

The defect is immediately visible to the naked eye and appears as a pattern of dots on the reflective surface of the disc. Users are reporting that the surface of the unplayable discs is still smooth to the touch, indicating that the defect is occurring beneath the top coating.

Other forum participants reported that their copies of Stranger Than Fiction, The Departed and Gone in 60 Seconds also suffer from the same defect.

Upon DailyTech’s inquiries to BVHE regarding a defective batch of The Prestige, a representative said that the company was not aware of any specific defects regarding its Blu-ray Disc titles.
Seems to be on a few movie titles. It must be a bad batch.

yuck

Seems like just a batch issue. Nothing serious.

Hmmm not yet I hope. Being that Blockbuster has basically said no to HD-DVD and the BRD (or BR or BD or whatever u wanna call it ) is pretty much the winner of the battle, this is the last thing they need to hear.

Hopefully it'll come down to some sort of yeast infection that a worker had and sneezed before the top coating was put on. The bacteria then stayed dormant until the light/heat from the laser gave it life..... this is the beginning of a sci-fi-horror

I don't know if they ever went through w/ it but they said(pre-bluray release) that they could make the discs out of cornstartch, lol.

I really hope this is mearly an isolated issue. Blu-ray, regardless of the companies that make and/or sponsor it is a surpior format...

I've got The Departed on BluRay....no defects here.

It's been a while since DailyTech attacked Sony....quite frankly they're overdue.

I mean what a stupid story this is. When no news is to be had, DailyTech goes digging around for the most absurd crap they can find. That one story about how the "PS3 is too big for Japanese gamers" was another retarded story. Good job DailyTech. Keep up the good work.

It just looks like some air got in-between the plastic disc and metal film. Nothing at all to do with Sony. It'll be down to a single machine in a factory somewhere, and none of the workers checking the CD's (but to be honest, they would be on awful wages - not like they care about the quality).
