Running SMP w/ GPU Clients?

Hiya Folders...I'm looking for a little advice when it comes to running the SMP Client and the MultiGPU client on the same machine.

Right now I've got the GPU client running for each of my x1900's. It seems to be running well, although one client is running about twice as fast as the other....But I also want to make use of my C2D. I ran the SMP for a little while but the GPU clients really seemed to take a hit performance wise. I lowered the CPU usage on the SMP but that didn't seem to help much.

So what's the best way to make use of the CPU in this case? I know SMP is the best way to go for CPU's, but maybe it's not the most efficient way of folding in this case? What do you think?

If you're solely after points, the SMP client will do the best for you. At 3.5 GHz, you'll do in the neighborhood of 1800-2400 points per day, depending on WU. My understanding of the GPU client is that it's good for 800-900 ppd per GPU, though I wouldn't swear to it. If that is correct, the high end of the GPU client is at the low end of the CPU client. I could guess that the CPU would draw significantly less power than two GPUs (especially since the CPU will be active "babysitting" the GPUs).

On the flipside, there are far fewer GPU clients in use than CPUs. If you're willing to forego some points and pay a bit more on your electric bill in favor of contributing to a different set of WUs that don't get much attention, that would certainly be worthwhile.

Like you found, running SMP and GPU at the same time isn't very productive. You may be able to lower the SMP usage far enough that it doesn't conflict with the GPu client, but you'll risk missing the very tight SMP deadlines.

In summary, you're going to make a good contribution either way.

I see what you're saying. Makes sense. I'll play around with some things and see if I can't manage to get both clients running efficiently. Otherwise I might just stick to the GPU's. Thanks, Taeric.
