Vista and RAM

Thread Starter
So, I haven't been here in a while.. =/ I was away enjoying my new setup.. =] Anyway, I had an extra 2GB RAM sticks in my house which I didn't know about, and now I'm wondering whether I should stick with 2GB or 4GB, or maybe just go 3GB. These are dual stick RAMs by the way so I thought it would be better to pair them up, since that's what they were built for. So please tell me whether I should go for 4GB, 2GB, or 3GB.

I have Vista Ultimate x86 and I know x86 OS does not recognize 4GB but I read somewhere that Vista performs better with much more memory so that's what I'm confused about.

As you said, 32 Bit Vista wont be able to make full use of the extra RAM, so it's probably not worth it unless you upgrade to the 64 bit version.

you could still stick them in and get the 3.25 it'll give you, but you should be fine with 2GB

[edit] are they of the same type that you have in right now?

Yeah they are the same type that is in right now. But the thing is, I keep getting BSoD everytime I start playing a game or encoding movie files to burn on DVDs (Nero Vision is a pain in the ass on Vista). So, I thought it was a RAM problem and I decided to add the two extra sticks that I have.

(unless someone knows the problem to these frequent BSoDs that I keep getting, then fixing that would be much better [I never got BSoDs EVER when using XP Pro with same setup])

EDIT: Speed of the RAM is PC6400 DDR2 800

Why don't you just replace them if they BSOD? If the 2GB give you headakes, adding another 2GB can't solve anything.

That, and if you put 3GB good bye dual channel, 3 isn't an even number imo. Performance will suffer if you put only 3 GB.

4GB? Nope, because win can't access that much under x86 and it's likely it will slow it down. Install Vista X64 and you'll see the benefits after a while, because superfetch will load more apps in the ram, so they will start faster.

That's what I'm gonna do anyway, my second 2GB kit should arrive tomorrow

So the BSOD is from bad RAM sticks? But the thing is, when I encode video files using Nero Vision on XP Pro, it works fine (Same RAM). When I try to encode video files on Vista using Nero Vision, oh my, after about 20 - 30 seconds of starting, boom, BSOD EVERYTIME. It happens every single time I run that program. Same thing also happens when I play CS:S or even Warcraft 3. That's pretty lame in my opinion with the current rig that I have.

If it's a ram issue or not, there's an easy way to find out: swap the kits and see, though I've heard NERO is not doing well under VISTA. I had Vista x86, and Nero burning room sometimes worked, sometimes nope.
