What is up with FAH?

Thread Starter
Windows SMP.
Both stock and overclocked when both pass 24+ hours of Orthos.
I can game all day and Orthos/MemTest all day, no problems.

Before when I opened CoreTemp .95, FAH, CS3, and a few other programs, my computer would crashed. Turned out to be from CoreTemp. Went to SpeedFan.

Now it's been doing it randomly. I'll be folding and my computer will lock up, my music will continue playing, my mouse will lock up, my music'll then stop, and then it restarts.

9/10 times it deletes the work unit because "unexpected termination of core."

This is pretty much the first time I've used Windows SMP -- is it really THAT buggy that it conflicts with stuff?

This last time it locked up when I unplugged my sisters camera from it.
Time before that it locked up because I closed SpeedFan.
Last time before that it locked up because I closed PowerISO.
Time before that it locked up because I moved the FAH Window.

Should I just go back to VMWare + Linux Folding, or what?

Pook,

Windows SMP is buggy at times, but not that buggy. I have one WinSMP box that has run for 3 months and lost only 1 WU.

Windows SMP is very paticular about network issues. What is your network setup like? Wifi? Router? Anything you can let us know will help.

I'm having "unexpected termination" with Ubuntu SMP. It started happening 3 days ago.

Like I said, Orthos (and MemTest) pass 24+ hours. I'm not unstable.
Hell, it does it at stock.

How would that cause instability and crashing of my computer? I could see FAH...but not my whole rig...

But it's modem -> Linksys WRT54G -> This rig and my P3 are connected to wired, my sisters connected wirelessly to it.

My rig is -fine- if I don't run folding. It never locks up.
What I don't get at all though, is if I leave SMP alone (such as when I sleep) and let it fold, it'll never lock up.

But when I jump on, I must do something that conflicts with SMP that it doesn't like, and then it crashes.

Orthos sucks. I have no idea what stress it does to the CPU.

I used to fold to determine my stability and it seems like you're lacking a bit of vcore.

question? Why SMP. I use the console one's and they seam to help but I'm not all that good with finding my own cores and downloading them etc..

How so? When I run 1.45v (1.47v Normal for 2.72Ghz) Orthos / Prime95 last about 5 Minutes. However I run Folding and it seams to last forever.. It's not good because i'm giving the core bad error's so I rather use orthos / prime95 than folding to determine stability

You are correct about the stability tests. Orthos Stable does not equal Folding Stable. The opposite is true as well. You can have a rig that is not orthos stable, and will be rock solid folding.

Folding, and paticularly SMP folding, introduces a whole different set of issues you have to be concerned with. Orthos is like putting your car engine on a dyno and running it up to super high RPMs to see if the engine locks up. It does not mean that your wheels wont fall off while driving down the road. Orthos does not test you network stability, the stability of you internal loopback, network adapters, software conflicts, driver issues, etc. SMP folding is much more than just floating point calculations. Something as simple as a dynamic IP address on you box that is renewing often can be disasterous to your folding.

Pook, your complete system crash seem troubling. FAH crashing is one thing, but full system crash should not be happening. Is there paticular programs or activities that correspond to the crashing, beside running the folding client.
