Anyone sand OFF a C2D IHS??

I've lapped my E6600 a couple of times now, and I've read into the removal of an IHS, but the thought of having to torch the IHS to break the soldering bond is a bit unnerving to me.



Then I thought about lapping the processor, it's fairly easy, and I heard the solder itself is easy to remove. What about just using a 400 grit and continue sanding on the IHS until you broke through then some hopefully light scraping to remove the remaining solder and it should be done...no heat?

Anyone heard of anyone trying that? I figured worst case I get down to a very thin layer of IHS over the core and that can't be all that bad. Also the surrounding IHS perimeter would help prevent any core crushing with the water block.

Should I go for it?

I really wouldn't risk it unless you have a processor to waste. Most professinal overclockers kill them half the time when they take the IHS off.

I once considered the same thing ...

I think it's reasonable, although if doing it by hand, then I think you'll be working a lot longer than you might expect.

I thought about going to a machine shop and getting some assistance knocking most of it off ... then finishing by hand.

Either way, after you hit the core, you'd still have a lot of metal hanging on the sides which could get messy.

That said ...

By all means ... I think you should do it.

I did a 3700SD like that once...I just filed it down about 3/4 of the way with a smooth cut mill file then lapped it...That was before I started just cutting the tops off...It knocked off a couple of C...I left a thin layer of the IHS on the core though..

Cool, I might try it...little bit at a time. I think maybe I'll just do the wetsand 400 grit by hand route. If that seems to be taking forever, maybe I'll drop down in grit.

Might take me a while, but slow is safe right?

Slow is safe ...

Sort of got me thinking about doing mine now; I'll end up waiting until I upgrade, though ... just to be sure.

Theoretically, it seems that even a heat spreader that is half as thin as the regular stock spreader, should still yield better temps ..

Ive never broken a naked CPU (except one I stepped on but that would have happened anyway )

Man..that would take a LONG time..id use a power sander and keep the ihs on it a couple seconds at a time until i know its gotten really thin..then continue by hand..But id avoid it all together, its too dam risky killing such a powerful cpu.
