What happend here (hard drive issue)

Thread Starter
ok guys this was the prelude:

i had my freinds pc which he brought over for a hard disk change
his pc build was basic and was the following

PROCESSOR: INTEL P4 3.0Ghz
RAM: 256MB
POWER SUPPLY: N/A
MOBO: N/A (INTEL MOBO,AGP,TWO RAM SLOTS,TWO SATA SLOTS)

as you can tell he told me limited things about his pc as i did not check them out my self (little error here sorry i have limited info for your guys)

ok this is what happend he had an 80gb seagate baracuda SATA already in his pc and was giving errors so he then wanted to change it, i got him a 160GB MAXTOR hard drive

------------------------------------------------------------------------
he then brought his pc over and then i began work on installing the new drive
i first thing removed his old drive and just plugged in the new one with its connector and the power cable that came with it on MASTER and not SLAVE
guess what happens....the pc fails to start......well then i connect the old drive and the pc starts all normall
seeing this i assume its some connection error i then disconnect the old drive and then i connect the new one again now this time what happens is funny....when i power on the pc SMOKE COMES OUT OF THE POWER CONNECTOR AND A STRONG ELECTRICAL BURNING SMELL COMES....thats the end of the 160gb. but the 80 is alive...connect that and its all good

we went and go a new drive from the market telling the vendor that this one was faulty he told us to try another one i brought that home and again i connect the 80gb first, but now it starts giving me trouble with the 80 as well now its not starting with the 80 either so i try connecting the 80 to MY pc and then yet again it BURNS OUT (SMOKE, SMELL etc etc)

I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPEND TO ME AS MY CONFIDENCE IN COMPUTER HARDWARE JUST WENT FROM 80 TO 15 IN ONE DAY

------PS
I THINK I COULD BE THE CONNECTOR THAT MESSED IT UP
I THIS POSSIBLE AS I HAD PLUGGED THE OLD 80 WITH THE NEW CONNECTORS JUST BEFORE IT BEGAN TO DIE WHICH NEVER HAPPEND BEFORE
JUST ASKING COULD THIS BE WHY THE OTHER 160 AND THIS 80 BURNED ???
THE SATA CONNECTORS ????

THANKS FOR THE HELP !!!

Were you using the SATA or Molex connectors (if the HDs had both)? Try using the other if you can. It does sound like a bad connector to me. No way it should short out two different HDs.

Yeah, make sure the PSU is turned off when you are doing this stuff.

I would say disconnect the cable then press the power button twice to release any charge that the power supply has.

Still shouldn't matter if it's carrying charge. I unplug the PSU and hit the switch and i have never had any problems.

yeah i did do that but aparently the drive that worked first (80) booted up fine until i used the new SATA and MOLEX connector that came with the new 160gb i think either the new MOLEX or SATA connector that came with it was faulty and fried the drive
