E4300 probs on DFI 975X-G

OK, this is a fresh build:

DFI Infinity 975X-G (latest BIOS flashed)
Intel E4300 (Stock cooler at the moment, Tt 9700 on the way)
PQI DDR2-800 (Power series, not the Turbo stuff)
eVGA 8800 GTS 320MB
PCP&C 510 SLI + Tt 250watt supplementary
4x 250GB SATA HDDs (Not in RAID, Seagate 16MB as C
Chaintech AV-710 soundcard
NEC 3550A DVD drive

For some reason, each time I try to OC it, the CPU multi changes to lower the clock. I've seen it drop to 6x sometimes, and 7x at others. I've looked in the BIOS for any type of setting relating to CPU multi or some Intel version of AMD's 'Cool n' Quiet' type thing, and I've come up empty.

I know I've got good power, so the PSU is out as culprit (unlikely in the first place)

RAM was memtested prior to installation in this rig, so I know it's stable to 800MHz minimum.

CPU was running comfortably @ 3.0GHz in another rig, so I know I'm not pushing it too far.

I'm clueless at this point. This is my first use of any mobo using the 975X NB. I've built two systems on 965 based boards with zero problems, and one on a nVidia 650 chipset board with no problems. Have I run into a quirk with the 975 chipset, is this BIOS related, do I have compatibility problems in my hardware, or am I just plain stupid and have overlooked something obvious?

Where do I do that? And idea what that option might be named in the BIOS?

Yeah go into cpu options, it may be under advanced something options. I usually disable all of them but spped step and eist should be disabled. C1E will change your voltage when at idle to the lowest possible and at load raise it to what you set in bios so if you dont want that to change then disable c1e also

Ain't THAT the truth! lol

Well, I disabled ALL of the Intel based options, including C1E, but never did find anything that looked like Speed Step. On the upside, I'm now running 2700MHz (300x9) and the multi didn't drop. Why? No clue... Do I care why (as long as it stays stable that way)? No so much.

I'm hoping to run into Chozart today & talk a bit more in depth with him about settings. He reflashed this boards BIOS, and knows more about it than anyone.

Anyone have an idea of what I should expect from this E4300? As much as I'd really LIKE to be able to run 400x9 and get 3600MHz, I seriously doubt that's feasible, even with excellent air cooling or even on water.

I thought I read somewhere that the 975's don't oc as well with the E4300's.. IDK for sure tho..

What production week is your cpu? It can be found on the retail box or the cpu's IHS... Will look a liitle like this Q702A43... Knowing when your cpu was made will help give you an idea of how it could oc..

The lowest oc I have seen using a decent mobo/ram/cooling is 3.0Ghz.. Most who are under that have poor cooling or cheaper motherboards/ram.. The highest oc with decent mobo/ram/cooling is 410fsb.. With modding and phase cooling the highest I have seen is 520fsb..

Your multi was dropping b/c of Intel's throttle controlling.. C1E and TM2 will reduce vcore and your multi. in order to keep the cpu as efficient as possible.. You disabled them and now your settings do not change unless you change them..

Read this thread and you may find somethings to try..

I'm still amazed at how many people don't know about EIST and C1E.
