Fan Control Help!

Thread Starter
I just modified my freezer 64 pro, lapped + as5 + vantec tornado. my temps are amazing, but this vantec tornado is so loud I don't want to use my computer, it's really annoying to game or listen to music with it. It uses a standard molex connector. Is there a controller that will handle this 1 amp fan, and will support a molex connector?

Thanks guys.

You just need a varable resistor like a light dimmer switch, it will decrease the voltage thus lowering the speed of the fan.

He wants a fan controller I guess.

Or you could explain to him how to do so.

Goto radio shack and ask for an adjustable resistor, Or "reistat"(sp) connect the power wire for the fan to one side and power from the source to the other and adjust the knob.

I haven't seen a fan controller that works with a molex plug...

In the past I have re-wired the molex to a 3-pin header plug. You don't have to use all 3 wires, as one is for the rpm feed.

If you are able to mod the fan, then you could use a program such as SpeedFan to control the rpm's, thereby lowering the dba.

You could also buy a Molex-to-3 pin adapter (some fan controllers come with them) and use that if you don't want to play electrician.

if cant buy a converter,
get a 3 pin extension cable, and a molex extension cable. then mod them into one.

i did it today and they work. i wouldve needed to mod them anyway, even if i did buy converters, and this was cheaper in my case.

Its "rheostat", and that is not what would be used. The correct component is a potentiometer. Go to your local component distributor and tell them you need to control a 1A load at 12v.

Well I asked my dad for help with this, because he knows how to build stuff like that, and is really god with a soldering iron. He made me a little board with just a couple things on it, stuffed it in a little box with a knob, and I had me a controller! I don't know where he got the plans for it but I know he used one website for direction, I will get that website today, but you can get most everything from radioshack.
