ATI's drivers are premature.
Nvidias are mature.

How much ATI's drivers will mature is up in the air, but nVidia is the choice to go for right now.

I suggest ATI. It is the better performing card in alot of benchmarks, at the expense of power and noise, which I can live with. The free games were a bonus also, which saved me some money.

The Nvidia card was more expensive when I bought mine, so the choice was fairly easy for me.

All of this premature driver stuff, seems odd to me. I haven't had a problem with any game as of yet other than the lost planet demo, which is a console port anyway. People say STALKER has low FPS, but I have had a consistant >60fps on that game.

I used to be an ATI fanboy, but I just got tired of seeing every game flsh that "Nvidia... the way it's meant to be played" screen at me. To me that says, Nvidia has its fingers on the pulse of the gaming world, and actually works hard to advertise well, and make games more compatible with their hardware. ATI justs eems to sit there and let people suckle from its teet... the perverbial gaming teet as it were.

My advice: go for Nvidia, not becuase of the better DX10 support, not becuase they have better software developpers, but becuase theya ctually show that they are interetsed in the games you play.

If I were to buy one of the two, I would buy the 2900XT. Just because of the power it appears it has, but is not utilized by the drivers. ATI themselves said their drivers were premature and with every coming drivers update, we would see performance gains. The good things about the 8800 is it's cheaper, quiets, less power and is proven it's performance. In the end, it's up to you.

My opinion? Do nothing. Why? Price cuts next month! Yipee!

Why you sold your 320mb, i may never know. But clearly you're in the pursuit of higher preformance. And by next month GTX's should be current GTS prices. Then its really a knockout.

Thread over.

Cya later.

Thread Starter
Well, generally the reason you want to upgrade is for higher performance... or an addiction. I'm in both camps.

I just read the article on how the 2900XT neared 8800 Ultra speeds in some tests and even surpassed it in some tests. Most will say, "That's no guarantee of performance, some tests is not all tests, who knows." Which is, of course, true, but if I can get a card for the same price as the 640mb that can beat the Ultra in just 1 test... I want it.

Not to mention I want to be a bit different, not that that is a good reason to buy things, but it isn't a bad reason to buy things either if it is supported by others. I've been moving back and forth, and I think I am now firmly planted in the 2900XT camp. Best Buy has a Visiontek for 379, which is indeed $60 more than the 640mb. Fortunately, I will be buying the games that come with the ATi regardless of card, so the prices even out essentially.

Anyway, more discussion is good too if anyone wants, just figured I'd pop in and let you guys know my decision; I am about 82% sure.

I forgot about all the games that were bundled with it. I recieved Stalker, which runs max everything at 1280x1024 with no stuttering at all, and the black box from steam which includes team fortress 2, half life 2 episode 2, and portal.
