Need help choosing a motherboard.

Hello everyone,

I currently have a Core 2 Duo E6400 and a Gigabyte GA-945P-S3 rev 1.0 motherboard with PQI DDR2 667mhz RAM.

I'm thinking about upgrading my motherboard and I need help choosing one. I need something that is under $150 and good for overclocking if I feel the need to overclock. I run everything at stock speeds right now but I want a good board for overclocking if I decide to in the future. I also need something that will work well with my 8800 GTS 640MB graphics card.

I've narrowed it down to a few motherboards:

Asus P5N-E SLI
Asus P5B Deluxe
Abit AB9 Pro
Biostar TForce 965
Gigabyte DS3

Wich one of these would be best? I've heard some good things about the Asus P5N-E SLI, and that seems to be the best choice so far. I'm also looking at the Gigabyte 965 DS3. I'm kinda confused as to which board to get. There's so many to choose from. Any help with deciding is greatly appreciated. I'm basically just looking for a good overclocker that is compatable with my ram and within my price range of $150.

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Are you ever planning to go SLI? If not, the Asus P5B Deluxe is pretty good., though I've never own that board.

I personally own the DS3 rev 3.3 and so far, it's an excellent board. I have reached 3.4Ghz without hitting a wall with this board. The GTS runs well.

There are still some cons on it. Rumors are that it's RAM picky. I have the green G.Skill DDR2 800 and my stock timings is 5-5-5-15, but I am unable to lower any of the values because of a huge performance decrease. Refer to this thread.

Yeah I plan on eventually running dual 8800GTS cards but that's not necessary at the moment. I could care less about running two cards right now. I just want to get rid of the POS motherboard I have and get a new one.

Of your choices and with $150, go with the Gigabyte or Abit. (Unless you plan on going SLI, skip over the Asus P5N-E SLI, and I think the P5B Deluxe is more than $150...but it is a great oc'ing board if you can scrape up a few extra bucks.) Also, if you haven't seen it, this sticky is helpful.

I haven't overclocked on this board because my processor was already running hot on this motherboard without overclocking. Although that seemed to be an issue with the processor itself. Intel sent me a replacement processor and now my temps are back to normal. Plus I used some AS5 so I assume the temps will drop even more after the 'break in' period for the AS5.

Also, I'm using the latest bios for the motherboard which is the F5 bios.

Motherboard and the temps of your processor have nothing in relations. Voltage would give you higher temps. Bad heat sink mounting or it was a concaved or convexed CPU, since you said that they replaced it and the temps were better.

There hasn't been in proof about the 200 hours of settlement with AS5.

Just curious, I tried to remount the heatsink on my old processor several times and it didn't change anything. I'm wondering if the place I bought it from put the heatsink on too tight and bent the processor casing so it was concaved... You think that's a possibility or is it really hard to bend them? Do processors just come concaved from the factory? If you can bend the processor casing from putting on the heatsink too tight, please let me know because I don't want that to happen to my new one. So far it's good but when I remount it on my new motherboard I want to make it on there as tight as possible but I just want to be sure I won't damage the CPU by putting the heatsink on there too tight. The heatsink/fan are the factory intel ones by the way.
