8800GTX Ultra review shows close performance w 2900XT - Page 4

It was late to the game, had immature drivers being late and now they want to pull ahead.. Ah they may but oh well... I'm happy with my GTS as is.

Going to get another one and sli em and a bigger monitor.. Or sell and gget 2 640's..

What I find intriguing is that I can run the Lost Coast test with a stock 1900XTX and a 3.5GHz E6600 all on 4x/16x, 16x12 and all else maxed or on with exception of vsync and it pulled a shade over 73FPS. Certainly it's not the same thing as Episode 1, but interesting none-the-less considering EP1 wasn't much harder if any than the base HL2.

Basically I wish I knew how they tested the HL2 EP1.

Are you running Vista and the DX10 demo? because i highly doubt you are getting those rates with dx10. Hopefully Nvidia can study the new drivers for the 2900xt and develop drivers for the 8800's to pwn ATI once and for all. Once drivers are better and Nvidia drops the prices (hopefully soon) im going SLI 8800gts (640 mb).

I should have been more specific, Lost Coast is Half Life 2. As is Episode 1

After looking over the review the drivers really only help the 2900XT in a couple games. ATI needs to do better than that. Most of the time its still a good deal behind the 8800GTX.
Very nice!

I wouldn't exactly call the hd 2900xt close to the 8800gtx. It was only in one single game benchmark that the 2900 did better than the gtx. To me, the 8800gtx is still winning by a very large margin.

I have yet to see any proof of the existence of the 9000 series anywhere close to this time.

Why is everyone saying 'oh it's too late, ATI is doomed'
Um hello the 2900XT came out ~ 3 weeks ago.....not to mention that it's selling well.
I find it hilarious that this forum is the only one where people say that ATI is doomed and the 2900XT is a POS (paraphrasing of course)
I guess there are a lot of younger fanboy types here...
Personally I'll buy the best for my money, including image quality. This has usually been ATI, but I may go NVidia. I really don't understand you people who talk about hardware companies as if they're your favorite sports team.

I like this. The 2900XT is quite a bit cheaper than the 8800GTX and if it does beat it, that is a hell of a deal.

Not to mention X38 is guaranteed CrossFire ready.

I like it.

The XT can be had for $160 less than 8800GTX. That is a pretty good deal. I have been looking around for a GTX at a good price, but maybe I will get a XT.

What is the power consumption like on these cards?

hehe
They use quite a bit of power, but you could run two of them in Crossfire with my PSU. Now before all of you NVidia fanboys start flaming, I have seen pics of a Crossfire system that was OCed using a smaller PSU than mine. It has at the VR-Zone review....
http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=4946&s=9
THis one they're OCIng with LN2 so they have a beefy 850W PSU. I can't find the review I read with teh 650W PSU, but they were running Crossfire on it....maybe I'm too tired and mergin my memories of threads that I read..
