I think you guys are gonna like this.
I was slacking and took my time--but is you got yer chopz together ou could pop this out in an hour max.
Materials are super cheap.
Here's the list
1- 2 1/2" 1/4-20 machine screw and a nut
1 el cheapo aircleaner ($23) that is exactly this size. They got them everywhere...proll could find them online at half the price.
I really spiffy air cleaner thumbnut (gotta have--the mod fails without it)
A Fan you can mutilate
A 12" piece of aluminum bar (1" x 1/8").
Tools you will need:
Blue tape--every modder should have blue tape.
Jigsaw or something to cut the hole.
Dril and 1/4 or 5/16 bit.
Pliers of something to crank down the nut.
CLamp or vise or something you can use to bend the aluminum beside your teeth.
Here are the pictures...I think it will be self expanatory
Now you initial idea for a fan hole would be trace a DVD and cut it out--well that could work but really you need to trace the iside of the aircleaner base--but I start with an X from corner to Corner and then lay a DVD down and center the X in the hole and trace and then lay the aircleaner on and trace--it helps keep it centered.
Optionally you could eliminate the base and just use the aircleaner filter to make a nice seal--but I like the base.
Here is the sacrificial fan a real whopper of a Panaflo medium--if this doesn't cool a case nothing will. We all know and respect Panaflo, right
With laser like precision I gashed a hole in the top. Note how the blue tape is used to protect the spanky new PC from gouges? That's
because you never can be too careful.
Now some people use tape measures...but the problem is getting the piece to fit--so I usuall mark things to the actual shape of what I am fitting. In this case the handle-shaped piece of aluminum I am about to make here needs to git thorugh this hole--so I centered it and marked it for a 5" top 2" sides and 1 1/2" flange.
This is what will hold the aircleaner against the panel--this could work on a side panel as well.
I did not have a long enough bolt but I did have a piece of threaded rod--I mark it with--ou guessed it--blue tape to gut it for size after nutting it to the aluminum.
Now that was really fun.
The key to this part of the mod is marking the fan so it fits perfectly--I mean really no more than a 1/8" between success and failure.
The fan need to be trimmed to lay in the base and not fall thtogh--set be small enough for the aircleaner to snug over it and support it.
The Panaflo is a looud fan IMO and the filter will muffle it and support it and dampen the vibration.
The point of modification IMO is improving the PC not just making it look gizomofied.
This will both immensely improve the airflow and add a neat feature to any case. As you might be able to see this iscould go on a side paenl wheere as an intake it would actually filter the air.
In a Little case like this that only has a rear exhaust having a powerful side intake would have made more sense than having a powerful blowhole but I'm not done with this one yet...
