Report: 66% oc of eVGA 8600 GT

Thread Starter
This post is to report my success in oc'ing my eVGA 8600GT, and to show my mods in case others want to do something similar.

For those interested in doing this mod; I followed this guide on VR-Zone: http://www.vr-zone.com/index.php?i=4925&s=4. The Inno3D card is laid out just like the eVga card. I attached two 25Kohm variable resistors and 3 voltage reading posts to the card.

I'm running vcore = 1.70V, vmem = 2.25V. Fully loaded, my temp is a pretty stable 56-57C.

Here are my final, stable numbers (tested with ATITool and then a full run through F.E.A.R):

That's a 66% oc on the core!

My resulting 3dMarks06 score:

Here's what the mod looks like:

As it turns out, the ground post isn't really necessary. I just make the ground connection to my case when taking readings.

Hmm, impressive mod. I like the voltage posts that you modded onto the card..very interesting.

nice mod, will you be able to take the mods off and step-up with eVga in the future? I'm sure you have 4 more ram sink left, take 2 and cover the voltage regulators, i did it and my oc is more stable.

mine is cooled by a VF700 alcu, temp can be up to 85 when full load.

That is really good! 670mhz is the furthest I can go on a 1.5v voltmod on my 7900GT's

Probably not because the VR zone article says it voids your warranty.

That mod looks awesome. I'd definitely consider it if i got that video card. How high can you OC without the mod?

Sozin, I thought fear's story and gameplay were pretty weak. Pretty much just a scripted frag fest, with some ghost crap that was never really explained. That said, the eye candy was great! With this board, I can max everything out. I loved all the slo-mo effects, like bullet contrails. I found myself marveling at things like how real the stucco looked with the lighting setup. The sound was also great, like going in and out of slo-mo, and all the shell casing effects.

With every setting maxed, the fear perf test gives 28% 25-40fps, 72% > 40fps. Just for kicks, I ran the old Quake 3 speed test. I thought it was broken, it went so fast. Test ran in under 2 seconds, did 750 fps.

lie495s14, thanks for the tip on using those extra heatsinks. I'll do that. What kinda voltages you pumping into the card to get it to 85C? Have you taken the card much further than I have?

Regarding the eVga step-up...I hadn't really thought about it. I didn't mod the card at all except to solder the wires onto existing solder joints. They'd have to look for that. Oh, and I'd have to swap back the stock sink, which would mean finding new heat tapes to go on the ram chips. Doesn't really matter to me though...only cost me $125, and I hope to be happy with this card for quite some time. In fact, I've got FEAR totally cranked in every respect, and it isn't even breathing hard. I'll need to find a more hungry game before a better card can even do me any good.

Any suggestions as to what game I should buy to really SEE what this thing can do?

I have no idea what voltage i'm running cause i have no multimeter, I did pencil mode without giving a damn of frying it, too much faith in eVga. I could bump another 20-30mhz on Vcore and Vram, but i notice some yellow dots in Nvidia control panal. Added a 92mm fan blowing at back of the card to be safe. I sattled at 900.vcore and 950.vram, naming it 'pervert edition' reflecting its OC ability > xfx:XXX . Can you imagine what 8900gs OC would be like base on our 8600gt vmods? gives me goose bumps just thinking about it.

Game to test OC. Need for speed: most wanted. my 7900gs may pass 3dmark05 at 650/900, but crashes in NFS:mw if oc beyond 600/700. It is one tough game for OC stablility.

edit: can you give me link to your 3dmark06 for compairing. here is mine http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=2253809
