Windows Vista - In Depth. Sucks or Nots?

Okay, I read a post or two today and I am getting really annoyed of everyone that hates M$ and Vista.

Let's backtrack to the Windows XP days...

Quote:
XP takes some getting used to--we often lost patience with it--but, after time
Source: http://reviews.cnet.com/windows/micr...7-6534881.html

Quote:
XP was the performance winner on three of our five configurations.
Source: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-3672_7-...49-8-7007240-7

-- XP was dull, slow and quite bad at launch although the hardware was mostly up to par and it was supported well..

Quote:
You can install XP on only one machine; piddling discounts for additional PC licenses; nags you to sign up for Passport Web account; multiple-user login screens are often redundant; heavy system requirements.
Source is same as above.

=======================================

XP SP1 fixed over 300 bugs.. That's sad... 300! And then there was SP2..

Source: http://reviews.cnet.com/windows/micr...4.html?tag=txt

-----------------------------

Vista:

Quote:
Windows Vista Ultimate does not put Search on the desktop (it's buried within applications, within the Start Menu); optimized only for the Microsoft Windows ecosystem (for example, RSS feeds from Internet Explorer 7 get preferential treatment); there's simply too much and not all of it is implemented properly; no new software yet written exclusively for Windows Vista; and there are too many editions of Windows Vista.
Source: http://reviews.cnet.com/windows/wind...tag=prod.txt.1

Search is soon as you click Start + in every Explorer window...
Obviously sidebar RSS will get IE7 treatment but with so many custom gadgets it doesn't matter anymore.
Most of everything has been implemented and is up and running now
There are lots of apps that are written to work with Vista..

Quote:
Windows Vista Ultimate does improve some features within Windows XP; fewer system crashes than Windows XP; Windows Vista offers better built-in support options.
Comparing to XP after launch, this is VERY, VERY good.

----------

What I am trying to get across the most in this thread is this:

Quote:
However, it is not worth rushing out to purchase. If you desperately need to buy a new PC (if your old one died or you've been waiting and waiting for Vista to be released), then by all means do so.
Source: http://reviews.cnet.com/windows/wind...tag=prod.txt.1

Listen people, if you are buying a new PC or upgrading most of your old get Vista. It has a huge known compatibility list and it works awesome.

Quote:
Finally, there's a compatibility wizard buried deep within Windows Vista. Most Windows XP applications we loaded performed just fine. Operating under the hood, Windows Vista convinces native Windows XP applications that they're running on Windows XP. Should you need to run an older application, say from Windows 95, the compatibility wizard allows you to tweak the display resolution and emulate Windows 95 for that program. For example, we were able to run a Windows 95-optimized game demo on our Windows Vista test system.
Source: http://reviews.cnet.com/windows/wind...tag=prod.txt.1

- Here is a list from different sites including OCN -

http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.ph...atibility_List
http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=5175
http://www.overclock.net/windows/133...atibility.html

----------------

If you are building a new system from a system builder or you are a system builder you can get an OEM copy of Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate for quite cheap. Ultimate is only 250$ per machine as OEM rules apply. Either way it's a great deal.

--------------

Vista is NOT better than XP and still loses in some benchmarks.
DX10 may infact be eventually ported to XP

BUT the FACT remains strong, Vista is the NEW OS from M$ and eventually just like XP has will sweep the market.

There are over 400 million copies of XP out so no, Vista won't be ahead anytime soon but eventually once people realize that Vista is a great, OS and that it isn't the devils evil attack on humanity by the means of M$ I am sure people will get into it.

Vista already has some great driver support, some great apps and uses RAM excellently.

--------------------

Arguments on OCN:

Vista eats your RAM*

Does your RAM disappear after or something? Does the system slow down when RAM is being used? No & No. -- Vista actually uses the RAM very well and manages it great unlike XP where it just sits there... Once you need the ram such as to play a game Vista understands and lets that amount of ram go. So long as you have 2GB of ram Vista will run nicely. Typing this I am using 40% of my RAM and when I game I am at 90%

Your games suck in Vista*

Srsly? WHERE!! My games run fine except for a split second of lag when I'm in that damn jet in BF2 all my games run fine. I get decent frames in everything except that badly coded and waste of a DVD spiderman 3.

Overclocking is so hard in Vista*

Read my sig guide. Turn UAC off and it's basically XP in terms of what you can do overclocking wise. I run 24/7 - 660 / 1000 8800GTS.

Start up is so slow*

You technically are not supposed to "turn off" your PC. What M$ wants you to do is hit the big power button on Start -> "Turn off" but it hibernates it. And does so well. To turn on my PC I tap spacebar, it posts and then Vista is right there.

Turning off is slow!*

Yes, it is. Tell it to turn off, shut off your monitor and speakers and whatever else you do and go away.. It will turn off by itself.. It will not start crying for you to hold it while it "shuts down."

---------------

Microsoft is not the devil, Linux is not the Messah and OSX is not God. DEAL WITH IT. Or whatever it says in my Sig.

--------------

Oh and if M$ is sooooo evil: http://www.gatesfoundation.org/default.htm

Built off of M$ basically.

-----------

This took me a really long time to write.

****NOTE: I AM NOT SAYING MAC SUCKS OR LINUX IS CRAP OR WHATEVER. I am simply saying, Vista is here, it works and if you are building a new PC or want the latest OS Vista is the way to go unless you need MAC for certain programs like Audi I believe does.

Totally agree with ya man, it's still a premature OS. I've used it and it does have some issues but with time I bet it will be as popular if not more popular then xp. I'm tired of haters and fanboys as well, I can never understand how people can take these things so incredibly serious.

What are you trying to say? lol
You seem to be a bit irritated when putting that together.
Good job

First off, I think it's a proven fact (correct me if I'm wrong) that XP does perform better than Vista for gaming (and maybe the specialized stuff as in AutoCad stuff/video editing - I'm not sure about this one, just an assumption/suggestion. Feel free to prove me wrong). I'm not saying gaming performance sucks in Vista, but just inferior to XP. Vista is good for everything else (basic stuff you do everyday and not CPU intensive apps). Especially a plethora of drivers and support is available right now.

And you said "You technically are not supposed to "turn off" your PC". That's a little absurd. You are not not supposed to turn it off. But it's just an alternative to actually completely shutting your rig down.

The gaming statement is correct but that's because games such as FEAR were written for XP natively so you can't blame Vista so much but the games are still playable. It's not like in XP you get 68 fps and then in Vista you get 3.

Starting Vista from a cold boot takes minutes and is painfully long not to mention it sometimes freezes once the loading bar goes away...

Basically hitting start and then the turn off symbol hibernates the PC in a very deep turn off state but wakes up very fast with the click of a key.

Okay, rumors are one thing so don't talk what you have no proof of. At M$ pace Vienna can take 6 years but who cares? Are you always going to wait for the next best thing? Soon as the G80's were out rumors came out about G90's. Soon as P35 came out rumors about X38 chipsets came out.

Next:

Quote:
In all, the CRN report finds that Vista was as good as XP in seven categories and better in four others (notably, Spyware/Adware, Obfuscated Code Exploits, RDS Exploits, and Trojans). Importantly, it was never outperformed by XP, and just as importantly, these tests were carried out using default settings
What the heck are you reading? Besides who cares if Vista isn't any BETTER than XP. If it equals XP now and XP has been out for so long what can come of Vista with more development?

XP doesn't "own" Vista. XP is the older wiser man about to croke and Vista is in training as the young 20 yr old.

You can't be a loyal fanboy if you bash the same company you love. Smarty.

I totally agree, I love Vista, one of my friend loves Vista, he is running the damn x64 and EVERYTHING works (except he didn't find drivers for his webcam), I am myself happy with x86, it's just great, solid and stable OS. Yes, I went to bed at 4AM yesterday night and the night before, to get everything working, but now, it's all smooth, how many hours sincerely have you spent tweaking, optimizing, troubleshooting XP? Come on, in 2 years of XP, I reformatted 8 times, because the OS had problems which were completly unrecoverable, and the repair installation sucked completly, after repairing, the OS wouldn't start all my startup programs, it could take up to 20 minutes to shut down...
