However, if games are written natively for XP, then Vista can't be blamed.

The truth is gaming performance is better on XP. But it doesn't suck on Vista.

I actually did that with my lappie. I had XP Pro on it and just used Vista transformation pack but with my new PC Vista was there and why make a new build with an old OS? Price wasn't much more either.

Guys there is a reason this guy has about 5 reps...

I appreciate this post. (as you can see in my sig) I'm thinking about booting with vista and xp. but recently I think I may just go with vista, as it seems fairly stable and I can make it work. Gaming may eek you out a few extra fps in games, but the difference between 63 and 66 fps is unnoticable, so it doesn't really matter. My question is though, I can get both vista business, and vista ultimate for free. If I use business I can sell ultimate for ~$200, but I can't do it vice versa (use ultimate and sell business) do you think its worth it, or is business just fine?

I'm running a corporate edition of XP so I don't need to buy a new license everytime When I'm home and my PC is down, I use my dad's with Vista.

What I would do is get Home Premium if you want to experience Vista and you are well.. at home. I have Ultimate and Bitlocker encryption is a pain without 2 HDD's. Which is really the only perk of Ultimate.

You have not even tried Vista yet, you are pointing out things that are not true.

Problems with games? DX10 is for Vista only (officially) and last time I played Lost Planet for DX10 or COJ for DX10 I couldn't test it on XP because welll.. THERE IS NO DX10 there? Compatibility, if you read OP you will see this is almost non-existent for good programs such as AVG, most games and compatibility wizard is amazing and makes games from Win 95 playable.. READ OP.

Lol, lucky I was thinking of Dual booting XP and Vista but there is nothing XP has done that Vista cannot except play movies from myspace.com/fox but that was fixed by telling Vista to run firefox in XP mode

the worst game for vista is probably Stalker, i get about 30fps in vista with most settings on max and no aabut in xp i get about 90fps with ALL settings on max and 8xaa, but stalker is also a game not coded too well, but all in all a 4-15 fps difference isn't bad at all.

Let's backtrack to the Windows XP days...

Source: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-3672_7-...49-8-7007240-7

-- XP was dull, slow and quite bad at launch although the hardware was mostly up to par and it was supported well..

Source is same as above.

=======================================

XP SP1 fixed over 300 bugs.. That's sad... 300! And then there was SP2..

Source: http://reviews.cnet.com/windows/micr...4.html?tag=txt

-----------------------------

Vista:

Source: http://reviews.cnet.com/windows/wind...tag=prod.txt.1

Search is soon as you click Start + in every Explorer window...
Obviously sidebar RSS will get IE7 treatment but with so many custom gadgets it doesn't matter anymore.
Most of everything has been implemented and is up and running now
There are lots of apps that are written to work with Vista..

Comparing to XP after launch, this is VERY, VERY good.

----------

What I am trying to get across the most in this thread is this:

Source: http://reviews.cnet.com/windows/wind...tag=prod.txt.1

Listen people, if you are buying a new PC or upgrading most of your old get Vista. It has a huge known compatibility list and it works awesome.

Source: http://reviews.cnet.com/windows/wind...tag=prod.txt.1

- Here is a list from different sites including OCN -

http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.ph...atibility_List
http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=5175
http://www.overclock.net/windows/133...atibility.html

----------------

If you are building a new system from a system builder or you are a system builder you can get an OEM copy of Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate for quite cheap. Ultimate is only 250$ per machine as OEM rules apply. Either way it's a great deal.

--------------

Vista is NOT better than XP and still loses in some benchmarks.
DX10 may infact be eventually ported to XP

BUT the FACT remains strong, Vista is the NEW OS from M$ and eventually just like XP has will sweep the market.

There are over 400 million copies of XP out so no, Vista won't be ahead anytime soon but eventually once people realize that Vista is a great, OS and that it isn't the devils evil attack on humanity by the means of M$ I am sure people will get into it.

Vista already has some great driver support, some great apps and uses RAM excellently.

--------------------

Arguments on OCN:

Vista eats your RAM*

Does your RAM disappear after or something? Does the system slow down when RAM is being used? No & No. -- Vista actually uses the RAM very well and manages it great unlike XP where it just sits there... Once you need the ram such as to play a game Vista understands and lets that amount of ram go. So long as you have 2GB of ram Vista will run nicely. Typing this I am using 40% of my RAM and when I game I am at 90%

Your games suck in Vista*

Srsly? WHERE!! My games run fine except for a split second of lag when I'm in that damn jet in BF2 all my games run fine. I get decent frames in everything except that badly coded and waste of a DVD spiderman 3.

Overclocking is so hard in Vista*

Read my sig guide. Turn UAC off and it's basically XP in terms of what you can do overclocking wise. I run 24/7 - 660 / 1000 8800GTS.

Start up is so slow*

You technically are not supposed to "turn off" your PC. What M$ wants you to do is hit the big power button on Start -> "Turn off" but it hibernates it. And does so well. To turn on my PC I tap spacebar, it posts and then Vista is right there.

Turning off is slow!*

Yes, it is. Tell it to turn off, shut off your monitor and speakers and whatever else you do and go away.. It will turn off by itself.. It will not start crying for you to hold it while it "shuts down."

---------------

Microsoft is not the devil, Linux is not the Messah and OSX is not God. DEAL WITH IT. Or whatever it says in my Sig.

--------------

Oh and if M$ is sooooo evil: http://www.gatesfoundation.org/default.htm

Built off of M$ basically.

-----------

This took me a really long time to write.

****NOTE: I AM NOT SAYING MAC SUCKS OR LINUX IS CRAP OR WHATEVER. I am simply saying, Vista is here, it works and if you are building a new PC or want the latest OS Vista is the way to go unless you need MAC for certain programs like Audi I believe does.

Well, You dont have much room to talk. Try running vista home premium 32-bit with 1 GB ram. Of course it doesnt seem slow to you.

I have Stalker here on Vista and it runs okay but yes I do have a second of lag or so in dense scenes but my settings are allll max. So yeah.

------

On a side note: aakar how can your sig say Crysis freak but Crysis is a mainly DX10 game which is Vista.. >_>

----

I said it before I have downgraded my rig for a few days and had 1GB of ram. It was crap. If you get Vista get that second stick of ram with it.

2 x 1GB Kingston Value Ram is about 80 bucks.

30 bucks or so a single GB stick. The same ones I have in my sig.
