Some newbie questions about my DS3

Thread Starter
ok im far from actually ocing the board at this stage its just hardware assembly lol.

1. my Big Typhoon cooler has 3 pins power connector but my DS3 has a CPU fan socket of 4 pins, is this normal?

2. i have 2 sticks of 1gb ram, i want to run them in dual channel, its ok to stick them in either both red slots or both yellow slots?

3. my case has 3 usb connectors, one is just called USB which has 8pins i know where to connect that but the other two are called (VCC,USB1+, USB1-, GND) which has 4 pins and another one called (VCC,USB2+, USB2-, GND, shield) which has 5 pins, i have no idea where this goes and it doesnt tell you in the manual, anyone got any ideas?

4. My big fan on the side of the case has a 4pin power connector which i can link it to my PSU, there is another small one which has 3 pin, where do i stick that? the only place i can fit it on my mb is a socket called system fan

5. and lastly can i stick my sata hdd and sata dvd drive in any of the 4 orange sata ports on the mobo? whats the difference between the 4 orange sata ports and the 2 purple sata ports?

sorry for the noob questions, id really appreciate it if someone can help me out

thanx in advance

I just build my new system with that mobo about 3 weeks ago. Depending on what the stock voltage is for the ram, you may have to change that in the bios. I have the black G.Skill HZ's, and i had to put only one stick in, change the voltage to 2, and then install the other, tech support actually helped on this one, after I got past the Hindi accent.

For Dual Channel: Make sure they go in the same color slot, so either both in red or yellow.

1) The fan is ok to put in pins 1, 2, 3, if it fits it will work, the forth if usually for data transfer for fan speeds. I think LOL just match it up with the stock fans.. If you had them.

2) Dual channel put one in slot one, and on the other set of 2 put one in slot one. If thats what you are asking.

3) Find another computer and look up the board on-line this will tell you. Another idea is to match it the same as the one you have connected. Or just guess and check LOL don't recommend the last 2 ideas.

4) the system fan is for the heatsink. The 3 pin there should be at least 1 other 3 or 4 pin connector to plug it into. could be four, if so the missing pin is no big deal. Check top right corner, mid right, and mid left sides. its all Labeled. If there is none and you really want the fan cut the connector and mod it to a four pin to hook up to the PS.

5) put it in the number one slot. usual top left.

I think thats right, unless im miss understanding something. Post you MB specs that you know next time

I'll try and answer your questions.

1. Already answered

2. Already Answered

3. The 2 case connections are just a USB header split into 2 (a header is 2 USB ports). See attachment 1.

4. The Southbridge ICH8 natively supports 4 SATA connections. The other 2 are an onboard chip device and is referred to in the manual as the onboard Gigabyte SATA2 chip in the manual. I would keep it disabled in the bios if you aren’t using them and use the other 4 native to the board.

ok thanx alot for the replies guys, so if the system fan is for the heatsink fan then should i plug my Big Typhoon into the CPU fan slot or the System fan slot?

and lastly regarding my 4th question i can understand the image someone posted so i just need to combine them and stick it in a similar USB slot that i can find on the mb?

cheers

Plug your Big Typhoon into the CPU fan header. The 4th pin is for the factory heatsink and fan which allows for the fan speed to ramp up or down in relation to temps. And for the USB connection, yes, just match them up and connect both into a single USB header.

SYS_FAN header is for a northbridge heatsink fan, or any other fan you might want to use

thanx guys im done up to the bit where i have to insert boot cd, i have one last question though, im using the TT big typhoon and it took me ages to get it installed properly, all 4 pin are down and locked in position, still the huge heatsink is slightly wobble if i nudge it, not a huge wobble but only a tiny bit i thought the heat sink was suppose to have a solid fix onto the mobo?

cheers

oh and also i read that the DS3 NB runs pretty hot sometimes would it be wise to buy an aftermarket NB heatsink like some of the Zalman ones to replace the stock NB heatsink?

edit: also looking at the Thermalright HR-05
