Barbs for heatercore?

Thread Starter
Alright, got a '77 Bonneville Heatercore (NO A/C) and I want to put this in my junk WC build. The loop will be 1/2" all-around so I was wondering what barbs to get. If you could provide me with a link to said barb you are recommending it would be great, so there is little chance that I can screw this up.

You have to cut the tubes and sweat on the proper fittings to be able to mount barbs on it properly.

What's the ID of the heatercore? Just go to Home Depot/Lowes plumbing dept and check to see which brass barb fits.

fstfrddy, you place the fittings over the tubes? Nice for more flow.
Once again...

depends what core you get OEM cores have one full length tube that is 3/4",
Mexican aftermarket cores have one tube that is expanded at one end to bring it up to 3/4 and can be cut off below the expansion. you never know which one you will get. these are both 77 bonnie cores, notice the one in the rear has the full length 3/4" tube. In that case the large section of the fitting will slip inside the tube with a little sanding. It doesen't matter if you have the newer style like in the first pic or the ones shown below.

I also have a 77 Bonneville (W/AC) and I just slipped the tubing over...It was difficult to slip it over it.

Of course, I used worm drive hose clamps to secure it

You can do that but it stresses the heck out of the tubing. I wouldn't recommend it with the cheap stuff and if you get one of the OEM cores you will not stretch the tubing over it. When you buy these $20 dollar cores what you are getting is remanufactured cores. They are nontheless great performing radiators by design. I have bought about 10 of them and gotten two with the 3/4" full length tubes on them.

you can buy adapters to go from the 3/4 to 1/4npt as well, if local hardware does not have try a plumbing supply house, here at home is Winnelson- J&B supply etc. they will have it for sure

FYI

I used some 5/8" brass couplers and cut them off trying to shorten the barb length as much as possible so I cut the tubes down pretty short. Then I used the flaged portion of the barb in the larger tube, and sanded down the narrower barb only portion down to fit nicely in the the little barb.

Just make sure you tin both parts before you put them together and you should have a good bond. For a water test if you have a compressor handy, just start the compressor and let it produce about 10psi, fill the reservoir with water and connect up the air to check for any leaks.
