ROFL. I think that people have issues that play WOW (or any game for that matter) for 12 hours every day.....
then again I would play BF2142 if I didn't have to work and my GF would leave me alone or cheer me on, instead of making me get off

Look people, anyone can be addicted to anything. Addiction can be measured depending on whether its being used or abused.

thats a great way to put it, though i would still like to be able to use this "addiction" as an excuse in everyday life.

Don't get yourself worked up trying to explaining the obvious: they just don't get it.

If you interpret that the right way, it applies to everyone, haha

If you don't let video games have priority over your social life, IMO you're not addicted.

I love playing video games but I don't let it get in the way of my social life (It gets in the way of my studies though heh )

Quote:
Opiates such as heroin, on the other hand, interact with a family of receptors that tend to blunt nerve cell activity. Along with a sense of euphoria comes pain relief, drowsiness, and slowed breathing.

Despite their distinct molecular targets and acute effects, all drugs of abuse tap into the brain's "reward system" -- a set of neuronal connections that tell us a stimulus is enjoyable and prompt us to repeat it. Food and sex activate the same circuitry, which may have evolved to promote our survival.

Using animal models -- rats, mice and non-human primates will self-administer the same drugs that humans abuse -- and more recently with human imaging, investigators have begun to map the neuronal connections of the reward circuitry.

A key component of this system is the pathway from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) located near the base of the brain to a structure beneath the frontal cortex called the nucleus accumbens. The long projecting axons of the VTA nerve cells release the neurotransmitter dopamine onto neurons in the nucleus accumbens, and drugs of abuse along with food-seeking behavior, sex and even playing video games engage this "dopaminergic" system, Winder says.

Quote:
So sex, food and social reward (for achievement or as a result of desirable or gainful behavior) can be argued to represent 'trophically' advantageous behaviors, and their reinforcement is mediated, at least in part, by enhanced activity within the dopaminergic system. However, this pleasure-seeking or reward behavior may be mimicked or bypassed by the use of psychoactive compounds which mimic or 'short-circuit' this enhancement of DA release, or else by abuses of food, video games or sexual activities, features of the densely-populated and technologically 'enriched' modern city environment.

It does, in a way.
