Whats on the DDR2 horizon?

Hey guys,

I usually keep on top of the news but I was wondering if anyone had heard if there was much on the way as far as memory (DDR2, only) is concerned. I know DDR3 is about to ramp up, but I am not ready to jump on that bandwagon.

Instead, I was hoping to drop a few bucks on 4 gigs (4x1? 2x2?) of DDR2 to max out what I have now. Like most, I was also planning on the ole' Q6600 in July/August timeframe.

Any thoughts? Just get it now? Wait until July/August?

Honestly, is it the RAM that is going to hold me back from a 3.2Ghz OC on a Q6600 or is it going to be the chip? My bets are on the latter, thats why I think waiting for DDR2-1000 is not something I should be doing.

Obviously, G.Skill HZs are probably my best option right now.

Reps for help, as it should be.

I would buy the ram now if I were you. I don't think there will be a cheaper time to buy DDR2 even when DDR3 goes mainstream. The prices of DDR ram have gone up drastically since the advent of DDR2.

I was seriously considering getting another set of HZs, but right now I don't do enough that would justify it. If prices start going up I might seriously consider it.

Yeah?

I noticed that prices of DDR were not actually that low about a year ago when I got some more ram for an older rig. More thoughts?

Thanks for the opinion, +rep

If you're doing high-res 3D rendering (pre-rendered stuff), webserver, or something like that, your RAM could slow you down. Other than that, I can think of no situation where you would NEED DDR3 right now.

If you need DDR2 ram, but it now.

There are 1000mhz+ kits out there and if you look at what happened to DDR when DDR2 came out, the prices seemed to get higher since they were discontinued.

DDR3 is on the way in now, although, most newer 775 motherboards will take both DDR2 and DDR3 RAM, so it's up to you whether you want to get some high-end DDR2 right now wait a while for DDR3 to drop in prices because right now it's not really worth it.

Well, mostly I am just wondering if there is some magical kit that is going to appear on the market between now and the end of July.

If not, I will probably just get a kit now.

Theres a "deal" on a 4x1 kit right now that would get me 40 bucks off retail *snicker*. As long as my P5W-DH can deal with 4 sticks of DDR2 overclocked, I kinda wanna invest in this.
