8600 and Windows XP - Page 2

I think EVGA is a good choice for a 8600GTS, only $150 after rebate.

But lonnie5000 has a good point:

Save a little more money and just get an 8800GTS 320/640 mb card. It will outperform the 8600 buy quite a bit and that means it will last you longer.
The 8800GTS 320MB will cost you about $100 more, but totally worth it. If you could save for it, great. If not, I don't think the 8600GTS would disappoint you at all though.

If your spending $225 on a 8600 GTS, isn't the 320mb 8800 GTS only like $50 more or less?
There's more to consider guys than just his budget for the GPU - we've also got to consider what he already has in his rig. That Opteron 165 will most likely bottleneck the 8800 GTS, which would mean money wasted on a card that won't have its full potential until he upgrades that CPU. Also, his PSU is only 460W, and the amps are probably just a tad too low for that card along with the rest of his hardware. My advice - get the cheapest 8600 GTS you can find.

Yes it works fine with XP you can only play DX9 though. But it dont matter because there aint that much DX10 games out anyway.Runs better with Xp i find.

what CPU would you suggest I upgrade too? and would a 500Watt PSU be enough?

your probley going to need the fastest AMD CPU that you can buy as will like realy good 500w or a good 600w PSU,Also it says you have an nforce 4 does that support 16x PCI-E becuase that is also needed i am becuase it dont thing that it run on 8x.

Also the 8800GTS is in the 250-300$ price rang and you are going to need upgrades so that you dont bottleneck it wich is going to bump the price why up with a new cpu and psu your looking at $500+,That is if you dont whant to bottleneck it a crap load,I say get the 8600GTS you can find a good one on newegg for 160$ and OC and get the same proformace as as the 230$ once.

The 8800plus upgrades are just to far out of my price range at the moment. I'll stick with one of the 8600's. I run a XFX 6800GT now and I'm sure the 8600 will provide a great boost to my system. Are the 8600's mid-range cards?

I agree 100%. The 8800GTS may not be a good option for you... look for a good 8600GTS.

yes it is a mid range DX10 card but its a hight end DX9,It is faster than the 7900GTX,i get about 20-25 more FPS than my dads 7900GTX in most games the least i got was 13FPS more in splinter cell DA but that games runs prites bad anyways.
