A bit of help, please?

Thread Starter
Hey everyone. I'm planing on building a fairly small sized computer into a briefcase, or some other metallic case. Of course, until I get a job, I'm going to start planing. As of now, I'm planing on getting a VIA EPIA-EN15000G motherboard with the embedded 1.5 GHz processor. I noticed that it failed to mention the height of the motherboard, but at the moment it doesn't matter.

So yea, I need help with a few things. I need to find a case with dimensions around 13"x12"x8", or similar. I also need help on picking a LCD screen, which would be fitted to the top part of the case.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ah, I remembered I had a third question. This will be, by definition and the materials inside it, a home computer, but I will be using it as if it were a laptop. Is there any possible way I could get the motherboard and LCD screen hooked up to some sort of battery, such as a laptop battery?

can't tell you about the 3rd Q, as I have no idea. but with dimensions of 13.12.8 you could fit up to a microatx 9.6" sq. a small ATX P/S, CD/DVD drive and a small LCD screen inside the case. The question now is, how small a flat monitor can you find that will work? I know with the ITX mobo's they almost all (that I've seen) have composite video out, so a cheap 7" "TV" off of ebay can run you like $45 (new) if you find the right vendor.

Yea, I drew it out this morning. I can fit a 7x7x3inch motherboard (above link), a 5x5x4inch PSU, a 7x4x1inch Hard drive, identical DVD/CD drive, a few fans, a wifi card, and a 12x10x2inch LCD screen, assuming I have a 15x13x6inch briefcase. I need that few extra inches to put some plexiglass, or even a few pieces of removable metal, for protection. But I still need to find the briefcase, LCD screen, and the PSU, then I should be fine.

Bump. I haven't been able to find any suitable briefcases, and because of that, I haven't been able to start planing sizes.

How about an aluminum case... there is an inexpensive tech case that may suit you. I've seen them in the $20ish range but can't find a link to display the one I have. If I recall correctly, either Home Depo, Lowes or Harbor Freight have them.

He hee, found it... but I have seen it cheeper elsewhere but I don't recall where

Hi.

Check out These cases.

Ignore the pricing and the tools that come with it.

I just wanted to show you some "Electricians tool boxes". They come in a wide variety of sizes. Perhpas you could pick an empty one up on eBay, or at a local Swap Meet (Flea Market)... or a pawn shop.

I think that type of case would work well. They are sturdy and are oftentimes hard-cases made of aluminium.

My suggestion is to check out the local thrift stores and "GoodWills" or whatever as you will oftentimes find top end stuff for a couple of dollars.

My guess would be hat a metallic case is sturdy and all but if ou want to blow someone's mind build it in a leather lined attached case like an executive would carry...no one would expect that...

You might want to look into canabalizing a super cheap laptop for the parts...the battery and all that would be smaller than any UPS...

However running it of AC would still be pretty neat...just make a niche for stowing the cord...
