M$ wont let me order alternate media

Thread Starter
it says on M$ website that you can order alternate media of windows vista (x64 dvd, or x86 cd's). so i go online to order an x64 dvd and it says there was no offer found. so i called M$ support and the guy said that you cannot order alternate media with an oem disk. i was under the impression that my upgrade license gave me the right to 32-bit or 64-bit vista, but apparently that's not true. anyone know of a way i could get x64 without spending a couple hundred bucks on a new copy?

Sell your OEM with a peice of hardware (usually MB + HDD) and buy a 64 bit license.

Ordering Alt media is only for retail

@mxg: i dont want to wait for selling it then buying something else. is it even worth the effort? there is no way x64 is that much better than 32-bit

@hobbes: my upgrade version is oem

what i was referring to were the retail boxed upgrade versions of vista. the ones that you would get at like best buy, they come in the same box as full retail.

the only real downfall of 32bit (other than not being able to utilize 64 bit apps) , is that your maximum RAM is severely limited. 32bit windows can only see a TOTAL of 4gb of ram. so if 4gb is the total subtract your video card ram from that, plus a little extra for other uses. which means that if you have 4gb of ram in your system, windows will only see about 3ish... depending on things it seems to range from 2.75-3.25 on average

64-bit Vista will only help if you are:
1) Running more than 3.5GB of RAM
2) Running 64-bit apps like Maple, MatLab, etc. You can expect a 40-60% performance increase with certain mathematics, modeling, or scientific apps.

Vista 64 also provides slightly more protection but is quite annoying since it requires digital signatures.
Once again...
