Rack-mounted PC Case mod

Thread Starter
My friend is really into music recording and he told me to take a look at Creation Station rack-mounted PCs. They are quite awesome, but the cheapest one is almost $2,000 and the hardware in it doesn't justify the price.

I was wondering if my friend and I could modify some tough mid-sized or full-sized towers to be rack-mountable.

Here is the website for the Creation Station

Indeed they are! That's why I'm asking how I could modify a mid-sized (ammo or armor jr.) or a full-sized (Armor) to be a rack-mounted PC.

Standard rack size should be (used to be) 19". You may be able to get a smaller sized case and make it a rack mount type.

just checked ebay, and they have plenty of rack mount cases CHEAP, as well as rack mount rails. the possibilities are endless, and dirt cheap comparatively speaking to the rest of the links posted.

I got a 4U rackmount case off Newegg for $80. It fits nicely in the rack with the other stuff. It's a standard ATX case made by Athena Power. It's pretty roomy and has good cooling, slap whatever parts you want into it really. Way cheaper than pre-built.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811192024

Oh yeah this is a build for my dad who records music, he wanted something that would sit in the rack, but this thing actually fits in the rack, mounts in, and looks right at home. With his four 19" widescreens the two video cards the Q6600 (after Jul22) and ram it came to like $1700 we figured out.

that's insane... you can get that rackmount case... almost identical... for 160 bucks... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16856999302

their high end system is $4,000?!?! ***? you could build it for ~$2,000 or less

they don't even include 2 80mm fans on the back... ***?!

EDIT: Newegg has another case that is almost identical for 90 bucks... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811128015

so... 90 for the case...
200 for the mobo
500 for the cpu
HaHa... 1gb+1gb+512mb+512mb DDR2/533?! 4 grand and they screw you on the ram too?!
160 bucks for FOUR GB of DDR2/800...
40 bucks for an 18x dvd/rw lightscribe...
42 bucks for 80gb 7200.10
160 for 2 320gb 7200.10
****... an X1050?!
40 bucks for an X1050...
50 bucks for a Zalman 9500
10 bucks for the generic card reader...
70 bucks for the Antec 500
139 for XP Pro OEM (which is what they are using, not retail)
say... 20 bucks for some nice 80mm fans...
20 bucks for the logitech cheap-ass combo
Sound dampening material? for what?! their 1 80mm 15cfm fan?! it's a server case... it's going in a rack... for that matter... WHY DOES IT HAVE RUBBER FEET ON THE BOTTOM!?!

Ok a grand Total of....
Drumroll please....

wait for it....

~$1541 -- Yeah... that's insane... they're charging a 160% markup... on top of the hardware cost... for what? a 2 year warranty?!

and what is a "Glyph Seagate"?! oh http://www.sweetwater.com/feature/glyph/
that's what it is... it's an aluminum/plastic hdd enclosure... that drops your FAST ATA interface to... get this... Firewire400... Why in the hell would i want a Hotswapable 400mbps interface... when they should include natively hotswapable 3000MBPS SATA drives?!?!?!

spend 120 bucks on a 5 drive supermicro cage... instead of destroying your I/O throughput...

i'd like to strangle their systems designer with a viscoelastic polymer cord... so no one could hear him scream...
