E6400 can't hit 3.2 without crazy settings/voltage

Thread Starter
I just tried OC'ing from 3.00 to 3.20. Let's just say its not going to happen. Right now at 3.00GHz im doing 1.35v BIOS 1.3250 Windows (vcore).

I set the FSB to 1600 and the BIOS voltage 3 notches up to 1.38. I got it to post but once it gets to the windows part it just reboots. So next i tried 1.42 BIOS and it gets to the loading bar screen than just sticks in a loop until i reset it.

Could it be a mobo problem?

I FINNALLY got it to boot at 3.2 with these settings.

Mem at stock.
1.45v BIOS CPU Core
1.4v FSB
2.0v Mem
1.4 SPP
1.5 MCP
1.35 SPP<->MCP

which is pretty horrible.

I still can't figure out if its my 6400 or my motherboard. Any suggestions?

IT sounds more like your cpu is the one limiting your OC. your multiplier is 8, the motherboard shouldn't limit you much

is your ram set to unlinked? if not please set to unlinked, ddr2-800 with 4-4-4-12 timings just to be sure and try again.

you may have an L2 stepping chip. Mine takes the exact votage to hit 3.2ghz. I think the b2 stepping were great ocers with lower voltages. L2 chips are volatge hungry imho.

I think i do have L2 stepping..not sure I'm kind of new to this.

my mem timings are 4-4-4-12

What would be a good stepping for a E6600?
B2 Stepping for the E6600 is the current stepping. You can tell if you check CPU-Z what stepping you have.

Always older stepping CPUs are better overclockers than newer stepping CPUs.

I finally got i t to boot AGAIN at 3.2 but orthos Small FFTs failed in 2 seconds (literally 2 seconds) and when i used Gromacs Core test it BSODs in 8. Sooo thats not too good.

hmmm.. i have an L712A E6600, it boots into windows at 3.65 ghz no problem....

the problem is running orthos for any length of time. i have only been able to get it stable at 3.56 so far, but ive only had it for a week, so there fiddling to do yet.

so i conclude that the newer stepped chips arnt necessarilly that bad. sure some of the earlier oned were better, but 3.56 is nothing to sneeze at.

is it that the L712"A" is better then the "B" step? i think i heard somewhere that the "B" step chips were more power hungry?

can anyone confirm this for certain?
