EVE Online - Page 9

I would LOVE to play games like EVE and WoW. If only they didnt cost monthly. I think thats cheap. All it is is just a cheap, low way of choking money out of all of you guys. Cuz they know addicted gamers will pay to play. And making them pay every month is outragous.

I wont stoop to these companies levels, i prefer games that DONT try and get money out of you all the time.

Think about it guys. Theres no reason at all for them to charge you monthly is there? EA doesnt do it. Steam doesnt do it. Gamespy doesnt. And the wonderful but kinda boring Guild Wars doesnt make you pay. So why do these companies make you pay? You all have fell victim to big business.

Great line of work to be in though. $15/month times that by the millions if not billions of players that pay that. And right there they are making at the very least over $15 million a month off these games that are years old. Well, cept Eve. But WoW has been around forever.

I take monthly fees from a different perspective. I mean we have to think about what we get with these monthly fees.

For instance, we get a sever. This serve needs to be up-to-date constantly in order to have lag reduced, SQL databases refreshed, etc. This doesn't happen on it's own. Somebody has to run a script or manually restart all the servers, plus if an unexpected problem occurs it will cost more time and money.

Another thing is that for most MMO's they are always making fixes, updating old content, and creating new content. Most of these show up in patches which are on a monthly (give or take) basis. The people at these companies may love making new content for games, but I am sure they want to get paid for it.

So overall, I don't think these companies are actually getting a full $15 in profit. I personally don't think the $15 a month is a bad deal, but I expect to see something for it because that's what we are paying for. It's about 50 cents a day... more or less. There is no limit on how many hours per day you can put in, so it's easy if you really wanted to get your money's worth. You never really even notice you pay the fee, unless you are penny pinching of course.

Just my 2 cents.

This is different from CSS, HL2, Guild Wars, etc how? CSS comes out with patches quite often, and so does Guild Wars. Guild Wars isnt a very bad game, its just a wannabe WoW but at least its free and its not buggy.

Believe me, all that fee is for is so the company can get more money. And usually that money isnt for making the game "better". Its gonna pay for the CEOs new benz . I mean come on, making at least $15 million + a month? How can you justify that as just a budget for making patches and improvements? Thats enough money to start developement on a whole new game and then some!

Oh and I agree with you on part of it. I know Guild Wars is free and I'm not really sure where the source of income comes from.. aside from expansions, which they don't release too often.

I am sure Blizzard thought their game would be good, but I don't think they thought it would go to this scale. When they started, they probably relied on the monthly fee. Today though, they probably have too much money to even know what to do with, but does that mean they should stop charging? I don't know, but that doesn't mean they should be penalized for doing so well. I know they have boat loads of money, but I am not going to despise them for it. They played the game just like everyone else and got it right.

I don't play CSS too often, but how many of those patches actually add new content? I don't really rememeber any. Same with HL2 with the exception of the episodes... which you had to buy anyway.

Yeah, as I thought. You have absolutely NO idea what you are talking about, and you have no clue how their servers actually are or are not run.

Your precious CSS is littered with loads and loads of servers. IF I want to create my own CSS, or BF2 server guess what?!?! I have to pay someone a month to host my own server.

Don't tell me it does not cost!

If you do not like it that is fine and dandy. But do not come in here with a "You guys are all victims and failures because you fell to business".

Your posting on a web page which requires a PC which people do not HAVE to have in order to survive. So you yourself have fallen victim to "business" as well i guess.

I called no one failures. Its just a thing to get money out of you trust me.

Yes, im sure it cost more than $15 million dollars a month to maintain servers

Please, be just a tad more realistic.

If i was spending more than $15 million dollars a month to maintain a few servers, they better give EVERYONE (even dial up people) at least a 10mbps connection with no bugs whatsoever and no lag at all.

And of course you have to pay for a server. Its like renting a car. Think about it. Its not YOUR server, its theirs, and they are letting you have a space on it so yea its gonna cost ya.

Think about this for a second. You cannot justify over $180 million a year to just keeping servers running and developing patches. I bet it didnt even cost half that to make the entire game itself. Probably not even a third.

I am by no means putting the companies down. They are very smart for doing this. They learned how they can easily increase income in very large numbers with little effort. Thats very smart indeed, they know a true gamer addict will pay almost any price to play. Thats just how the world works.

I still think they are good and fair. Alot of MMO's you do not even have to buy the game up front. And even if you do it may be 20 bucks at most. So basically at paying 15 bucks a month I have to play damn near 4 months before the game costs me as much as say Crysis or COD4 did.

And I don't know about you but alot of games by the time I've had it for over 4 months I;ve already moved onto something else.

Now sure with some MMO's you can get hooked and want to play it longer. But hey then it's all your choice.

Anyways, enough with the monthly fee crap. Obviously some people will do it and others won't. I say everyone should at least give it a shot because in my experience you really don't even know you are paying for it.

Now back on topic. I just started EVE a like 2 days ago (14 day trial). Seems really cool, but I have no idea what I am doing. On a mission now I can't seem to figure out...

At this rate will most likely upgrade account just so I can figure out the game a little more.
