What about direct connection to the router, with a Cat 5 cable?

I guess that will have to do, only have a 6 foot cable so its going to start getting crowded in the computer room, 2 computers + his laptop on 1 desk yikes

mine lets me "unhide" the WEP key when I go to wireless security...but then again, I'm using DD-WRT...so I dono if the regular firmware will work like that...

There's a reset button on your router. Just reset it, then tell your dad that there must've been a power surge that erased the router data. Course, you can only tell him that if he's not really good with computers. That's what i'd tell my dad. Another option is if you have two wifi cards for the laptops, then you can do an ad hoc connection.

Thought about reset / power outtage idea, but doubt he would fall for it. and I can't really just connect the two laptops via wifi because then it won't be able to access the internet too

Due to the fact that your router may in fact be someone else's router... the most help you'll get here is physically reset the router, and reconfigure it...

I know thats what it seems in the first post even though it isn't. I think we'll just give up and run a ethernet cable around n cram all the computers in 1 room.
