Anyone want to go over and make any suggestions for a build for my dad? He has a P4 dell.. Wants something new. NO gaming needed. lots of office use. Want an all around machine NOT focused on games. Still capable of em tho- Faster is better. So is cheaper.. And quiet! Silence takes place OVER extreme performance.. Any recommendations? I need help on the hard drives..

It will have vista and office 07.

Here is what I have. On the case, he seems to like the stacker 830, but we are gonna go to frys and look at a few..

Thermaltake 750W Power Supply: $180

2Gb of this gskill: $115

lite-on sata everything burning drive: $40

Creative X-fi platinum fatality: $180
(NEED front bay.. Want the audigy 2 platinum, but cant find it? NOT an autio buff.. This was all that was on newegg. Want something cheaper.. help?)

Gigabyte P35: $130
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128050

GPU: 8600GTS (Direct X 10..) $165

E6420: $186

Hard drives.. Seagate barricuda for data, and possibly another for OS and apps? Raptor? In this case, load times are MUCH more important than games...

Heatsink: Tuniq Tower? Quiet is better.. I WILL OC it..

Thanks!

unless you plan on upgrading your graphics card big time you could save about $100 on a psu. you should get an 8800gts if it's in the budget. you should go with an ultra 120 extreme for the heatsink. and 7200.10 seagates for storage. why are load times sooo important to you?

Cause its the most noticeable thing in non- 3d applications? And makes more sense than graphics power in this case?

This remember, is my fathers basic desktop, bit of photo editing, lots of office, some web, etc. It just has to stay good enough for the next few years..

(Srry that that wasnt clear)

For heatsink, the Thermaltake Big Typhoon is the quietest compared to the Tuniq Tower 120, you can either get that or this. Both of them are suggested and give a difference for CPU temperature. This power supply is better, Corsair 620HX: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139002. Basically you need two hard drives? How big do you want for storage, and how big do you want for OS? I say try to get 8800GTS/X instead, it is better for the long run.

More watts does not mean more power, therefore does not mean more power to give to a graphics card. It is the ampers that matters.

Right. I just saw that PSU reccomended...

Any REASON to get the 8800? That would matter to my dad?

2 Hard drives- Wouldn't it be faster? How much difference does a raptor make, anyway? (And the OS would be on the small fast drive, with data and paging file on the other..)

Vista even USE a paging file? o.0

i think the raptor is kinda loud.... if u want silence that's really not the way to go... unless u have a real silent case or you've seen it in action and don't think it's that loud

2 Hard Drives at raid has double the transfer rate? or it was something like that. Oh if it was for your father, then it's not needed, unless he plays hard-core games. But for long terms when he no longer needs it, it might be still useful the 8800 series.

2- 7200 rpm SATA II drives in raid 0 is quick.

i just picked up 2 WD 250 gig SATAII raid edition drives for 88.00 bucks a pice, and installed them in raid 0, they bench fine. and cheep too. ;-)
