suggestions/improvments for a build? To be purchased in the next week. - Page 2

on my build of last week, i originally ordered a OCX silent extreme PSU (130.00), but the guy couldnt get one in good time, so i opted for the Coolermaster Xtreme power Duo (600w), it was 85.00 and works just awesome.... i had reservations at first, but am not sad i got it at all....

just my 2 cents...

Go for onboard sound for now & put the $$ toward a 8800 instead of a 8600..

I will second the onboard sound. I have an Audigy 4 and I can;t see big difference with my onboard except that onboard is a bit louder and rarely makes crisping noises.

Onboard? Um.. No. I have listened enough to know that cars usually ALWAYS sound MUCH better than ANY onboard. My rigs will ALWAYS have a card of some sort..

However, if anyone knows how I can hook up a standard soundcard to the front mic/headphones on most cases, that would be GREAT and I could use a muuuch cheaper soundcard. (Or the old soundblaster I have in my drawer if that works..)

Itd be great if it WASNT creative.. And was by a company with better drivers...

-----------------------------------------

Can anyone give me a real reason to spend the extra $100+ on the 8800?
Quieter is better. Should I look into aftermarked cooling, or is the nose while in 2d light usage quiet enough on the 8600? Same on 8800 (Wondering if 8800 would be much louder... Cause thats bad..)

-----------------------------------------

Ill use that PSU then- unless there are any other recommendations.

-----------------------------------------

Still no input on whether 2 drives gives any appreciable benefit? And if the raptors are loud, any other reccomendations for an OS drive?

-----------------------------------------

We went to FRY's, and my dad liked the P182 (Gunmetal) So we got it. Everything else will be from the egg, but the case looks grat. And its QUIET with the fans on low.. Itd be great if I could keep em on low.. Hrm. Maybe find a nice QUIET cooler that doesn't need that much airflow?

And for that case, is a different PSU recommended? I notice many people mentioning some PSUs are better than others for that case..

And now I need a case fan for the front. Or 2? Should I just use 1, or use the wind tunnel push/pull thing? (P180/2 specific- the upper HD cage can be used as a wind tunnel for a push / pull case fan orientation, pointing right at the GPU) In any case I need a good QUIET fan or 2 for that.. with a fan control. If its push pull I imagine one of the 3 speed control types would be better or maybe not.. I dont know. Help?

-----------------------------------------

THANKS for the input!

UPDATE: I researched sound cards with front panel connectors and came up with HT Omega claro/striker. Striker is cheaper, but vista driver is RC.. And incomplete... But it works. Just missing functions.. SO I think Ill go with that.
