Website Noob Needs Help!

post #1 of 15

So I'm trying, but it's so tacky. I went through GoDaddy.com to get the ads up and running for a clinical research site my family operates and owns. I am clueless on how to get the name out there on google and other search engines, and seem to be having problems with meta tags. You can laugh all you want, I laugh too, but here is what I have so far...

http://www.sierraresearch.net

Any, and I mean any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

Forgot to mention, willing to pay for animated intro page that is better than the current one. I know a lot of you are very skilled in this, as I've seen your threads of your various genres of work...

My first advice is to not use an animated intro whatsoever.

I have read a lot of articles and been designing for quite a while, and almost everything I have read points to intros being looked upon poorly. (I will look for some of these so I can backup what I am saying)

I have read that around 90% of people click on the 'skip intro' button - what then is your intro then? It is purely an annoyance.

Also, think of reapeat visitors - every timethey want to come back, they have to see that intro again - even if they just click past it, it becomes annoying.

Next, what does your flash intro actually do for your site... it doesn't really explain much, it is just a nifty display of what someone was able to produce in flash.

Finally... music... a HUGE design no-no. You should neveruse music or sound in your design unless your site actually deals with such things such as a band website or something multimedia like a game, etc. There are many ways music annoys people:
What if I am listening to my media player, then that loud music comes on? - My first reaction: close that window... and that is not what you want your users to do.
What if I am sitting quietly, my volume is turned up loud but I am not listening to anything (could be at work or at home). The music starts and blares me out... once again, my first reaction is to close the window.
That is jsut a few, but music = bad.

Ok, to sum up:
Flash intros = annoying/pointless
Music = annoying
Annoying/pointless content = users go somewhere else
Users go somewhere else = bad

So the commutative property of mathematics says:
Flash intro = BAD

EDIT:

Another reason to not use flash intros: MANY PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE FLASH!!!

If you want it to appear on google just wait a few weeks and it'll appear, but only if you search for "sierraresearch" without the quotes. If you want it to appear for other keywords, you are going to have to generate a minimal traffic of 15-20 unique people a day, or pay for advertising. for meta tags, put as many keywords relating to your site as you can think of. If you need help with coding or flash or anything at all, pm me.

As for getting your site on search engines, there are a efw things you can do.

-First thing is simple, get set up with a google webmaster account and put your website up there.
-Then you will want to verify you are the owner by uploading an htm file with a name Google specifies.
-Next thing would be to upload a sitemap - for sitemap making, I recommend the free utility available here: http://www.auditmypc.com/xml-sitemap.asp
-Meta tags are good, but don't invest too much time in them as modern search engines put a lot less emphasis on your meta tags.
-Update your robots.txt file; this is the file that tells the web crawlers where to go or where not to go. There is a good generator HERE. Many of mine are simply:
Code:
User-Agent: *
Disallow: *
-Bay far the two most important things for search engine optimization are obvious and simple, but not simple in the way that they are easy to do, just easy to understand:
#1 CONTENT - web crawlers crawl your content - if you do not have a lot of good content, you will not get noticed as much. Period.
#2 quality link-backs - you need to get reputable sites to link to your site. Getting out on message boards is an easy and free way to do such things, but you need to hit a lot of users that may have the ability to recommend you be linked to, or link to you themselves from thier sites. Also, linking between mutally beneficial sites is a great way to do that, just start contacting some webmasters. But the easiest way to get good link-backs: see rule #1

Have a useful site with quality content, and the rest will take care of itself eventually.

This is surely not a comprehensive list, but it will get you started.

Otherwise, you could always pay an SEO company with that money you decided not to use on a flash intro

this damn site is on godaddy.com with their site wizard, should I rebuild and create my own server? Otherwise I don't see how I can place the robot file in the root directory?

Good to see you intend to remove the Flash intro, this can cause problems for users who don't make use of a flash plug-in, it will also save a little on the bandwith, both at the server and client ends. Always try to reserve flash animations and intros for things that are practicle, such as a product demonstration. As for Meta tags, I covered this last year in my web development module. They should always go in the head section of your page and break each keyword with a "," as shown below.

Code:
<head>
<meta name="keywords" content="sierra, clinical, research, development, labs" />
</head>
