Did I get a lemon?

Thread Starter
Hey all, I just put together a brand new system a few days ago and today I decided I wanted to OC the video card a bit. Just to note I have a BFG 8600 GTS OC.

I installed ATI Tool to do the overclocking and when i saw what the stock clock settings were I was, well......pissed! The memory speed was set to 1008Mhz but the stock setting is suppose to be 2000Mhz! Am I missing something here? Is there a multiplier effect that I'm not taking into account or did I get a lemon? I double checked the clock settings through the nVidia control panel and got the same readings so its not the program.

Thanks,
Ravage

edit: I tried to manual raise the speed to 2000Mhz but it locked up on me right away. Highest I can get is 1120Mhz without any artifacts showing up.

Depends on what the settings on ATITool are! That converts to 2016 Effective speed!

NVM- You can't change the settings, YES that is correct. Must multiply by two in order to get effective Memory clock speeds. Mine defaults to 700 but my effective is 1400!

atitool shows the base clock. the adversised speed of 2000Mhz effective, because the ram is Dual Data Rate, so it transfers data at 2x1000=2000Mhz.
It locked up at 2000Mhz in atitool, because you weret tying to runit at 4000MHz...you said the higest you colud get was 1120Mhz, so that is 2240Mhz effective speed

Ah I see. I knew that there was a multiplying effect, just didn't know if it was being used in ATItools. I guess I can be happy now that I know that. I guess I got a decent OC out of that memory then.

as soon as i read the first post i was gonna go into my classic Dual Data Rate explanation haha...if the thread count still goes back far enough, read my first thread ever. It was about the exact same thing
