The Gateway is better, to me. I'm pretty sure it's either your resolution or an old revision. I experience none of the problems that you do.
Same here, and it is a no brainer... as in if you get the Dell you have no brain

I have no issue with color banding on either Gateway monitors at all.

ElMikeTheMike has one as well, and he hasn't reported any banding issues.

Also, are you using DVI or VGA? I admittedly have no experience with VGA, always use DVI and my settings are always at native res for the desktop.
No problems at all either. I'd recommend this Gateway to anyone. I'd return it and try for another if i were you.

It is the same LCD as the Apple Cinemas, Dell 24" and one more... I forget which...

Apple is overpriced and only includes a DVI input and the Gateway is the only one that didn't skimp on the guts of the monitor... the inputs on the Dell ruined an HD signal... and it does not display 1:1 pixels... I know cause I bought one of those before Audi mentioned this one to me... feel safe about this one...

also... I normally would say no to something as pricey as this but if you want to display 1080p for satellite and future DVDs then this is a good investment...

make sure you have a GTS 640MB or higher though... cause you are gonna want to set it to 1920 x 1200 which is 2,304,000 pixels... a 320MB GTS won't move this thing... those are for 1680 x 1050 or less pixels, I had one and it ran on my 22" Dells of said rez just fine... but no go with the 24"

ugh, this is so hard to explain why this monitor doesnt look good to me lol.
http://s2.desktopmachine.com/pics/Po..._1600x1200.jpg

thats the background i have for my desktop. Notice how it goes from red to black. In between the red and black are bands, which doe NOT look good. When i maximize then minimize a window and look at the background, the bands actually move for about a second because the monitor is trying to display them. I'm on my friends old dell crt monitor and i'm looking at this picture, and it doesnt have that problem one bit, but this 630 dollar monitor does and thats why i'm not happy with it. Yes, it is a very nice looking monitor, but the gradient on this thing just plain sucks. My friend has a 20" dell lcd and his looks great. Audi, put one of these pictures on your background for me real quick and tell me if you can see distinguishable bands of color or not please.

did it and yes there is all kinds of jump in luma and chroma values... but that might be the jpg compression which your friend's monitor doesn't have enough rez to display... try getting a higher rez picture as a background and look for the jumps... then save it as a jpg and check again...

it seems windows will only allow jpgs to be used as background so you might have ot do it by viewing photoshop or other photo editor in full screen mode.... but I don't even know it Photoshot is doing a good job at creating a smooth gradient because I see the banding in both my Dell 1620 x 1050 and the Gateway

You might have to take a picture of a paper backdrop, I don't have one but Audi might have a Green screen and possibly others

yea, i'll try to take a picture too. I have the 1600x1200 picture as my background and my res is also 1600x1200. I'm going to play around with the color settings on this and the nvidia control panel a little to see if i can get rid of this. ive been reading up all morning about this and one guy said he got rid of most of the banding with messing around with the nvidia control panel.

dude what exactly did you do... I just set it up to play COD (never really used this monitor much at all on the PC) and I found the banding all over the place...

Quote:
I don't know if other folks are having this issues, but this all but solved my banding problems.

The displays OSD was indicating a refresh rate of 59.7 Hz. With the NVidia drivers (93.81), I set a custom timing for 1920x1200 and forced the refresh to 60Hz. I verfied this with the OSD, then fired up the NVidia display optimezer. The banding in gradients is no longer as noticable - still there, but not as pronounced.
is that what you did? reading the whole thing now...
