Thermalright heatsink pics (56k unfriendly) - Page 2

Hmm... Thats alot of replies so fast.

Okay, I didn't really mention where the fans are blowing towards.

They are all blowing towards the PSU. But when I've got the time, I'll try with the HR-03 blowing downwards.

The main reason I want the HR-03 blowing this way is because I'd like to leave space for a second X1950Pro with the same cooler. If I do, it will definately take up that space down there. And you can see that my soundcard makes it impossible to have the second card in the other configuration.

As for the temps, I'm using whisper quiet fans here. We're not talking 100+cfm behemoths, but 30-40cfm fans. I don't expect temps to be close to what reviewers have. At stock settings, I've managed to get 35C load.

Well just as word of advice, pushing is ALWAYS better than pulling the air through your sinks. I understand the HR-03 thing, but I'd even flip that fan to blow inward. Then flip the U120's fan to blow downward and make some type of shroud for it that blocks the PSU fan from pulling away the U120's air...

BTW, how does that HR-03 cool your X1950? I'm trying to get one..

Actually, I think the Ultra 120-Extreme has 6 heatpipes technically. They just run through the block on the bottom to both sides.

This heatsink is the Ultra-120, not the newer Ultra-120 extreme. I know my heatsinks.

Yeah, I do understand that pushing is better than pulling, and I have experimented with that. With the low cfm all these fans are pushing, the difference is minimal. We're talking 1C difference. And its not always positive.

If I had switched the fans to blow the opposite direction, the GPU get hotter by 1C, while I get 1C cooler on my CPU. Given that the GPU runs at a much higher temp (Oced, it goes to 78C), I'd rather a slightly cooler GPU than CPU, which is already pretty cool.

But like I said, I'll put the HR-03 on the opposite direction one of these days, and rearreange the airflow just to see how much of an improvement it would make.

A shroud is a good idea really.... but I'm really wondering how I'm going to pull it off, as you can see, space is very limited....

Actually pulling off a HS is better than pushing through a HS. But you had it right if I read correctly, pulling off your HS and pushing towards your CPU.
