Anyway to bring my HDD's back to life?

Ok this is sort of dumb but here goes.

I have an old 3 to 4 pin converter for my fans (except this one uses the 5v instead of 12v) and so I plugged one of my fans into it.

When I started the computer up, everything was good for half a second. All of a sudden I heard both my HDDs cut off and then the system powered off. The strange thing is that another fan that was using the 5v rail was still going while everything else was turned off (including the fan I just plugged in).

So anyways, I unplugged the fan I added and booted up again. Except that when I turned my computer on, the HDDs didn't power up. Everything else worked (and is working now) fine.

I tried the HDDs on a different PSU, they still didn't work. I tried another HDD on this compy and it worked. I've reinstalled the OS on a spare HDD.

After some inspection, the adapter had a short in it, so the 5v rail got shorted temporarily until I cut the power off from the back.

So the question is this, is there any sort of fuse or other thing on the HDD that I can replace/fix to get them back or are they gone for good? Everything else that uses the 5v rail still works except the HDDs.

Suggestions?

They're both 80gig WD IDE drives.

The HDDs were all. Both DVD drives work, mobo's ok, no problem with the gfx card yet. Everything except the HDDs are fine. The HDDs don't do a thing when I try to give them power, I was sort of hoping there would some sort of relay switch or something that I could mess with to get them working again.

No problems whatsoever from anything else.

BTW, I tossed that adapter in the trash right away.

EDIT- Although I would love to get them both running again permanently, all I need is to boot once and get all my stuff off of them.

Not sure if this will wokr but putting them in a ZIP lock bag and placing them in your Freezer for 30mins helps.

But this may not be any good for your power issues :S

That only helps for motor and platter/disk head issues.

The controller is probably fried, you can buy another HD of the same exact model and switch out the PCB.

I'll give it a shot if I can find another identical HDD. One of them just had games on it, so it's not that important. The other one had all the music/videos/downloads I've accumulated over the past year and a half. It was no problem to reinstall XP but losing all the files is what hurt. I'll see if I can't dig up one of those funny shaped screwdrivers somewhere and see if I can't do something.

Thanks for the replies you guys.

Thanks for the links and quick replies man.

BTW, if I took the PCB from my 40GB WD HDD, could I stick it on the 80GB one and then just manually configure the HDD in the BIOS for the number of cylinders/heads etc?

I'd have to find out the specifics for this drive somewhere first though...

Unfortunately, the only screwdriver I have that has the star-shaped head is too large to fit into those tiny HDD screws. Maybe a flathead will work?

Nope, won't work. You can't configure the platter/heads anywhere. The only way that will work is if you are able to replace the firmware on the hard drive itself.

Ok. So all I need to do then is just replace the whole PCB and I might get it back?
